Diving into Afrikaandermarkt, Part 1: Field Trip
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
Schedule:
   - Departs at 11:45 SHARP from the Keilepand Outdoor Point 1
   - Returns to Keilepand by 14:30 in time for the afternoon sessions

Capacity: Limited to 15 (first come first serve)

Description:  Visit and learn about Rotterdam's most culturally diverse market and grab a bite to eat (on your own).  We'll also use a Market Place Audit tool to assess how the market works as a public space and discuss some initial ideas on-site that we will further develop during an interactive workshop scheduled for Friday @ 11:45 in the Keilepand Mezzanine (Diving into Afrikaandermarkt, Part 2: Workshop).

By foot and tram, it takes about 45 minutes each way, so we're encouraging participants to use bicycles or share Ubers to get to the market and have more time there.

Market meeting point: Since we may be traveling to the market separately, we'll meet there in front of Cafe Bloemfontein, Bloemfontein Street 1, at 12:30 pm.

Reimagining Sustainable & Just Urban Futures Through the Lens of Degrowth
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Join us for an interactive walkshop where we invite you to critically explore placemaking community engagement potentials through the lens of degrowth. We invite you to take a walk around the Katoenhuis area and exchange views on the challenges faced by placemaking practitioners, exploring solutions for more sustainable and just urban futures. Our goal is to identify challenges and solutions to the socio-ecological transformations of public spaces through everyday experiences. We will critically reflect on potential risks associated with placemaking such as gentrification and greenwashing. Lastly, we will consider how placemaking practices could be informed by concepts of degrowth and reflect on solutions that can benefit the participants’ practices in their local cases and examples.

We hope that participants will take away useful insights and meaningful connections, and an overall understanding of the degrowth main concepts.

How can placemaking contribute to actions and processes rooted in sharing and caring?

How can these actions and processes drive radical sustainable changes?

Let’s think about it collectively!

In Her Footsteps: A Human Library Walkshop
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
A dynamic session combining 'walkshop' and 'human library' experiences offering tools and strategies for fostering public participation and leadership in creating gender-inclusive, movement-friendly public spaces.

Explore parks, playspaces, market squares, and streets, using a free public tool to assess their quality, inclusivity, and movement-friendliness. Along the way, 'check out' books from our human library to gain insights from personal stories and professional experiences:

• STEPS TO CHANGE by Karen van de Spek, Municipality of Rotterdam, discusses how to improve walkability and safety for women by integrating gender perspectives and local insights.
• EMPOWERMENT AT PLAY by Lore Cuypers, Vital Cities HOWEST, and BRAVE explores how action research and co-creation can empower girls to transform public spaces for sport and leisure.
• FEMINIST PLAY by Nourhan Bassam, author and founding director of "The Gendered City," shares insights from her global work on feminist spatialities and the Women After Dark Project.
• A TACTICAL GAME by Laska Nenova, BG Active and Placemaking Europe board member, highlights temporary, low-cost methods to create vibrant public spaces that encourage movement.

Matt Roebuck from the Netherlands' Knowledge Center for Sport and Exercise will host the session, introducing the Center’s ‘Building Blocks for Movement-Friendly Environments’ and the 'Inclusive Movement-Friendly Environment Scan'.

Nature Explorers Walkshop: Discovering Rotterdam's Hidden Residents
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Join us for the "Nature Explorers Walkshop," a unique and immersive adventure designed especially for children and their caregivers through Rotterdam's urban landscape! Participants will embark on a playful exploration of the hidden world of non-human actors that call our city home. This interactive walkshop offers a hands-on experience, engaging with the city's trees, water canals, and native plants and animals through fun challenges and activities.

Participants will receive a "Nature Explorer Kit" containing a map, a booklet with profiles of non-human personas, and materials for the journey. At various exploration stations, they'll encounter different non-human actors like trees, birds, and flowers, learning fascinating facts about their roles in the ecosystem and completing related tasks.

Through this engaging session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity, urban resilience, and the importance of coexisting with nature in urban spaces. They'll discover how these natural elements mitigate climate change impacts and enhance community well-being.

By participating, children and families will develop a greater appreciation for Rotterdam's natural heritage and be inspired to advocate for sustainable placemaking practices. This session not only promotes environmental awareness but also fosters a sense of stewardship and connection to the local environment, making it a must-attend event at Placemaking Week Europe 2024.

Artist Driven Development BRUTUS
Friday September 27, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
When no one wanted to believe in M4H, let alone live there, artist Joep van Lieshout saw the potential of this area. After moving in 1987 and starting AVL-ville in 2001, he decided to do something big here in 2008. Something that makes a difference and that benefits the city and actually everyone. Not a modest short-term initiative, but grand, compelling and forever.  Now, a decade and years of intensive preparations later, the preconditions are there for the realization of Brutus.

Since 2018, AVL has been working with developer RED Company (Nanne de Ru) to realize this project. The time has now come to draw up a definitive plan in 2024 for the development of this globally unique project of homes, studios and a museum. The museum is secured for eternity through an innovative business case. The Museum will become a long-term public institution for the city of Rotterdam through a foundation.

The aim of the session is to introduce participants to the ideas behind Brutus and its innovative approach to creating a vibrant place that will remain affordable in the future for cultural institutions, artists and its residents. It will be an interactive session with ample opportunity for questions.
