The official launch of PLING explaining why and for whom we are there. Make placemaking an integral part of all phases and forms of area development and not something temporary.
When it comes to placemaking in area development, the challenge lies with the users of the area. With new construction, it is often not clear at the outset who the ultimate users will be (residents, entrepreneurs and passers-by). And with an area transformation or urban renewal you are dealing with existing users who may or may not return after the development and new users who, just like with new construction, are often difficult to map.
The complex issue behind placemaking in area development is therefore what are the wishes of current and future users with regard to the public space and the plinths before, during and after development.
Using concrete cases, PLING demonstrates the value of placemaking in area development. By sharing success factors and setbacks, we make the lessons learned accessible to participants for inspiration and motivation.
We think we have launched a valuable concept with PLING. But we are still at the very beginning. We would like to discuss with the participants how we can help and inspire municipalities, corporations and developers with PLING.
How can we work together to make placemaking an integral part of area development and what is required for this? And what role can PLING play in this?

Have you ever gone out on the water in the historic LeuveHaven of Rotterdam to look at and find out all about bridge keepers' houses? And in the meantime give something good back to the people of Rotterdam? Join this session!!
During the discovery tour by boat, we will show you the beauty of the small vacant heritage, some of which have been (sustainably) repurposed and others are still in use or are empty. We meet the initiators and can ask them anything.
We start at ‘de Lage Erfbrug - where it all started for our foundation by Lotti Hesper. Then we continue by metro and get off at the historic ‘Leuvenhaven’ of Rotterdam. At the Maritiem Museum we hop on the bus boats and meet the initiator of KleanUpKlup 'Sterker door Schoon', they keep the water of Rotterdam clean. We sail further on the water to explore some other bridgekeeper houses in the Rotterdam port area from the boat and we tell you about the past, present and future of the tiny properties. And while we are having fun, we ask the participants to do a Harbor Clean Up, so we leave a clean trail.
Since 2012, the Bridge Keepers' Houses Foundation has built up various expertise in the field of knowledge center, projects and management and aims to give empty bridge keepers' houses in the Netherlands a new and sustainable purpose.
NEW MEETING POINT: We will start the Walkshop at the 'beginning' of the Nieuwe Binnenweg - at the Eendrachtsplein. We will meet at the sculpture of the Gnome aka the buttplug
The Stories of a Street Walkshop invites you to participate in unconventional archiving; walking, collecting and drawing the longest shopping street in the Netherlands. With Stories of a Street, the collaborative effort of researchers Leyla Hepsaydir and Rebekka Schächer, you will enter the chaotic and beautiful world of the Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam’s West. This diverse street exists as a complex ecosystem, catering to varied needs and communities at risk from incoming gentrification.
The walkshop is physical and practical, existing in three parts: 1. Walking the full 1.8km of the street 2. Observing the street and collecting stories from street inhabitants 3. Translating these stories into drawings for the unconventional archive
The Walkshop harnesses graphic storytelling to archive the collected oral histories, documenting the street’s people, places, and objects through memories, daily issues and future hopes. Tangible results in the form of your own illustrations will be added to the unconventional archive.
Stories of a Street aims to develop an interdisciplinary method of architectural research, proposing an alternative role for the architect as listener and carer. Leyla and Rebekka aim to open up a conversation on the importance of diverse inner-city areas amongst an interdisciplinary audience, from inhabitants to policy-makers.
Join us for a Placemaking Club Night with Live DJ Kostrok! Since 2010, Kostrok has been making an impact on clubbing culture. In 2021, Kostrok entered live in the metaverse to communicate a whole new world through a small character, represented with big glasses and an intrinsic joy that perfectly represents his music: joy, a referential meta-journey halfway between house-disco, italo disco, breaks, electronica, sythnwave and above all, a lot of energy focused on the dance floor.
