Diving into Afrikaandermarkt, Part 1: Field Trip
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
Schedule:
   - Departs at 11:45 SHARP from the Keilepand Outdoor Point 1
   - Returns to Keilepand by 14:30 in time for the afternoon sessions

Capacity: Limited to 15 (first come first serve)

Description:  Visit and learn about Rotterdam's most culturally diverse market and grab a bite to eat (on your own).  We'll also use a Market Place Audit tool to assess how the market works as a public space and discuss some initial ideas on-site that we will further develop during an interactive workshop scheduled for Friday @ 11:45 in the Keilepand Mezzanine (Diving into Afrikaandermarkt, Part 2: Workshop).

By foot and tram, it takes about 45 minutes each way, so we're encouraging participants to use bicycles or share Ubers to get to the market and have more time there.

Market meeting point: Since we may be traveling to the market separately, we'll meet there in front of Cafe Bloemfontein, Bloemfontein Street 1, at 12:30 pm.

"From Flying Carpets to Concrete Change: Saving Schouwburgplein from a Temporary Fate!"
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Meeting Point: The Blue Carpet on Schouwburgplein (3012 CL Rotterdam, Netherlands)

This workshop focuses on Rotterdam's Schouwburgplein, exploring strategies to transition temporary interventions (such as the Flying Grass Carpet, programming, events, stage, flower boxes, etc.) threatened by budget cuts into sustainable, lasting transformations. This session aims to address the challenge of transitioning from temporary placemaking initiatives to lasting, permanent changes, using Rotterdam's Schouwburgplein as a prime example. Currently facing financial constraints, the United Schouwburgplein Association struggles to sustain programming, jeopardizing community engagement. The temporary intervention Flying Grass Carpet, now in its 7th year, faces uncertainty due to halted plans for redesign and implementation, exacerbated by budgetary issues. Moreover, leakage in the underlying parking garage and the deteriorating roof/floor of the square necessitate urgent action. Participants will collaborate in brainstorming sessions, focusing on the necessary hardware, software, and organizational structures to revitalize the square for future generations. The collective insights will culminate in a comprehensive proposal to be presented to the Municipality of Rotterdam, seeking support for the revitalization efforts.
