During this tour, you will be guided past various climate-adaptive measures that the city, with, for or by residents, has taken to keep the city liveable. In addition, you will also learn everything about the municipality's climate adaptation programme.

Tuesday September 24, 2024 16:00 - 17:30 CEST
Capacity: 20 people (first come, first served)

Starting point: City Hall, Coolsingel 40, 3011 AD Rotterdam
Ending Point: Metrostation Leuvehaven

Why is Rotterdam so un-Dutch? This tour introduces you to the typical Rotterdam scene, with stunning modern architecture and social experiment. Countless cultures influence the vibrant urban life. Historian Ferrie Weeda explains how Rotterdam has been continuously reinventing itself for over 150 years. The result is a city of contrasts - often the product of conflict. Big scale icons like Erasmus bridge, Markthal and Cube Houses contrast with charming parks and picturesque districts like Delfshaven. Huge port industries on one side, alternative sustainable experiment on the other. In this tour you will learn about Rotterdam's strong civic pride, based on a history of struggling, adopting and resilience.

City Tour: Rotterdam & its Waterfronts
Tuesday September 24, 2024 16:00 - 17:30 CEST
Capacity: 2 groups of 15 people (first come, first served)

Starting point: Wilhelminaplein, under the bridge at the quay
Ending Point: Metrostation Leuvehaven

The Rondje Bruggen is a popular running route that runs along the north and south banks of the Maas and no fewer than three iconic bridges: the Erasmus Bridge, the Willems Bridge and the Koninginne Bridge. There are great opportunities to develop the area into a river park. Where you can relax for a while, with a beautiful view of the river. Where you can meet friends or meet new people. Where you can muse on a bench, exercise outside or just take a walk. Where you can eat your sandwich or drink a cup of coffee during the break. This is already clearly visible in some places and good use is also made of public space. In other places, a lot still needs to be done to make the space attractive for use. Take a 'bridging tour' and discuss your ideas and experiences with us and each other.

City Tour: Rotterdam & its Intangible Neighbourhood Heritage (Wijkcollectie)
Tuesday September 24, 2024 16:00 - 17:30 CEST
Capacity: 17 people (first come, first served)

Starting point: Metrostation Delfshaven, 3026 RE Rotterdam
Ending Point: Metrostation Delfshaven, 3026 RE Rotterdam

The tour will be provided by the Neighbourhood Collection Foundation (stichting Wijkcollectie). They provide a platform for neighbourhood stories in Rotterdam and preserve them as the city's ‘intangible neighbourhood heritage’. In this way, stories are made visible, preserved and shared. Not with a large collection of stories as an end goal, but precisely to learn from those stories and use them to initiate connection and cooperation. Stories can inspire others, spark ideas and bring people together, that's why!

On this tour, be inspired by the local heroes of Bospolder-Tussendijken, a Rotterdam city district where everything comes together. What do they experience here? What ideas do they have for the neighbourhood? And how do they make sure these ideas become reality?

The System and Us. Bold Moves Towards Change.
Wednesday September 25, 2024 10:00 - 11:15 CEST
As our cities are caught up in a polycrisis, it provides momentum to truly act differently. Rotterdam is known as a city not shying away from bold moves to rethink itself. Currently the city is leading the way in its climate adaptation efforts, going all hands on deck to prepare the city for changing weather conditions. As this years’ festival will showcase, taking a placemaking approach to tackling climate change will yield the opportunity to address multiple challenges at once. After all, ‘When you focus on place, you do everything differently’ (Fred Kent). Placemaking has the potential to be truly regenerative, strengthen our democracies, and turn dysfunctional systems upside down. As the first morning panel, Gabriella Gomez Mont, Jenny Anderson and Johan Verlinde will set the stage for a week of insightful discussions and proactive engagements. Daring us to be bold in the impact we make, and think about our ability to challenge the status quo.

Revisiting Densification in the Post-Covid Era
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 12:15 CEST
This session reports on a project that challenges the orthodoxy of property densification, following investigation of the future of the city centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK and Newcastle New South Wales, Australia. During the covid period, urban design literature asserted that city centres need more public places and particularly green spaces. However, there is little evidence of a change in strategy in the post-covid era. This project explores alternatives to increasing densification, to enhance people’s mental and physical health, and enjoyment of city centres, while mitigating the effects of climate change. This is in the context of the fourth industrial revolution and reduced demand for commercial and retail buildings.

The session will use visual information, from the two Newcastles, and other cities in Europe and the Americas, to explore what is happening in densification trends following the pandemic. It will explore the principles involved in city centre transformation that establish any particular strategy, but most importantly creating place and making it last. There will be a short presentation of findings that poses questions for discussion among the participants, enabling them to express issues that are important to them. The discussion could include environmental, social, political and economic perspectives.

Note: This session will use headphones for audio

Climate Adaptive Cities: An Expert Workshop on Greening through Placemaking
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
This session aims to explore and develop innovative strategies for integrating green spaces into urban environments through placemaking. By sharing our insights from the European projects Regreeneration and Greendense, participants will comprehensively understand the challenges and opportunities related to greening dense urban areas. Specifically, the cities involved in the projects are 10: Paris (FR), Barcelona (ES), Alverca (PT), Bucharest (RO), Dordrecht (NL), Bruges (BE), Mechelen (BE), Bremen (DE), Cork (IE), Nantes Métropole (FR).

This session will foster a collaborative environment where participants can exchange ideas and develop new approaches to urban greening, ensuring lasting impact. By integrating cultural capital and green infrastructures, the session aligns with the theme of co-creating inclusive, resilient, and dynamic urban spaces. Participants will leave with practical strategies and a deeper appreciation for the power of greening in urban development.

Making Place for a (Water) Resilient Urban Future: Reflections on Learnings & Practices from Latin American Cities
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
In this session, participants will explore water-sensitive urban development challenges and strategies from UrbanShift Latin American cities, including San José, Belém, Florianópolis, Mar del Plata, Teresina, and Salta. These cities will demonstrate how they integrate local communities in planning urban spaces that address climate risks while promoting socio-economic benefits.

The session will feature an interactive panel discussion focused on three key scenarios: river basin management, waterfront and coastal development, and sustainable urban drainage. Each city will present its specific issues and approaches, with opportunities for the audience to engage through questions, reactions, and polls via a digital platform like Menti.

Participants will also participate in a hands-on exercise, collaborating with experts and city representatives. Divided into three groups, each addressing one of the scenarios, they will use maps and tools to co-create solutions. This exercise will emphasize balancing community needs and socio-economic benefits with building urban resilience.

The session will conclude with an open discussion on the groups' results, providing a platform for exchanging knowledge, testing tools, and showcasing best practices. This collaborative session will offer a unique opportunity for the Placemaking Week Europe participants to connect with Latin American experts and cities, fostering dialogue and future collaborations across regions.

Improvising the City with Street Scene Theatrics
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
The aim of the "Improvising the City with Street Scene Theatrics" workshop is to empower participants with innovative tools for community collaboration through the fusion of improvisational theatre and placemaking principles. Inspired by Jane Jacobs' insight that a good sidewalk's "ballet" is filled with improvisations, this session seeks to enhance participants' ability to engage with diverse community actors in creating vibrant, dynamic public spaces.

By integrating the foundational improv rules—such as "Yes, And...," "Make Statements," and "Support Your Scene Partners"—into the placemaking process, participants will develop skills to think creatively, respond adaptively, and build trust within their communities. The workshop includes interactive improv games and group activities that encourage spontaneity, teamwork, and playful problem-solving.

Through theatrical-improvised scenes, attendees will experience firsthand how these techniques can be applied to real-world placemaking scenarios, fostering a collaborative spirit and generating fresh, inclusive ideas for urban design. Ultimately, the workshop aims to equip urban planners, community organizers, and placemakers with the confidence and creativity to transform public spaces into thriving community hubs.

Let's Picnic: Unlock the City, Discover the Library!
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
Join us for a walk taking us in unexpected directions and ending in a picnic where we'll sit together, share food and ideas, and create a temporary space where we imagine the city as the future library. This is an exploration of how we harvest and share the city's creativity, knowledge, imagination, and stories.

What if you didn’t see the library as a building, but as a function, with the city as its biotope, where citizens are active curators of local knowledge?

Picture yourself as a future librarian, using all your senses to gather knowledge during our walk, deciding what makes it into your unique library collection. What do you see, smell, hear, taste, and feel that fits in your library? And what is the sixth sense of the library?

As permanent knowledge hubs, libraries can ensure continuity in placemaking processes, contributing to collective intelligence. With this walkshop, we aim to gain valuable experience to use with the Ministry of Imagination and in the future central library of Reykjavik.

The picnic setup creates the informal context that enables respectful dialogue and leads to meaningful interactions. Put your blanket down, take your shoes off, have a drink, and share your ideas!

A Roadmap of the Ambitions of the Keilekwartier from Now Until 2050
Wednesday September 25, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST

If we want to create meaningful impact in the field of climate change mitigation, public participation and sustainable and circular urban development there is an urgent need to bridge small scale civic initiatives (in placemaking) with larger infrastructure and area development initiatives and enable participation and civic development in these projects. While civil society initiatives are increasingly being recognised in the field of place-led development, civil society actors and initiatives in the area of infrastructure still receive too little acknowledgement and support. But what can we learn from these initiatives and what (regulatory) framework do they need? In this session we will take a closer look at one of the most interesting area development projects in Rotterdam (Keilekwartier / Merwe-Vierhavens) and learn from international best-practice examples. We will investigate how civic infrastructure initiatives (e.g. energy communities) can foster resilient area development and create benefits and a just transition for the local community. How can these large scale developments still include citizen initiatives in a meaningful and just way? Can we develop good overarching frameworks for these developments?

Power of Design
Wednesday September 25, 2024 12:30 - 13:00 CEST
This session will delve into the co-evolution of spatial and institutional dynamics in urban development, highlighting how design entrepreneurship acts as a catalyst for urban transition. We choose the Luchtsingel project in Rotterdam, initially launched as temporary urban infrastructure that revitalized local development before becoming permanent, as our case study. This city-making initiative combined public (crowdfunding and community-building practices), bureaucratic (the City Initiative), and professional (the 5th IABR) forces, providing a rich context to identify the actors and their strategic actions throughout the transition process. By dissecting these interactions, we aim to uncover the mechanisms that drive changes in urban landscapes and influence policy-making. The session will offer researchers, professionals, officials, the public, and communities insights into how emergent design decisions can lead urban transitions by interacting with socio-cultural and spatial-political conditions. Our goal is to encourage the transformative potential to nurture more urban experiments for sustainable development. We aim to provide both theoretical frameworks and actionable insights at PWE ‘24, to understand and drive urban change through design experiments.

Empowering Communities for Climate Resilience and Green Cities: Bottom-Up Approaches, Technology, & Inclusion
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
In a rapidly changing world, it is crucial to empower communities and public administrations with a comprehensive understanding of collaborative climate adaptation efforts. This session delves into grassroots initiatives, institutional strategies, and technology integration to offer participants insights into diverse approaches to addressing climate change and fostering community resilience.

We will explore case studies from:
- Italy, where we will reflect on how active community participation can influence, from the bottom up and in a collaborative manner, the effective achievement of the administration's objectives;
- France, where we will focus on how through community-driven actions you can tackle intersectional struggles: climate adaptation and gender sensitive public space.
- Romania, where we will share models and best practices of multi-stakeholder involvement in the lives of local communities from different perspectives (tight-knit communities, communities with a lot of seniors, communities with a lot of tenants, etc).

The final part of the session will present results from a recent study on citizen-led urban greening initiatives, discussing priorities and sustainable practices. We will highlight technological innovations crucial to smart city development, including IoT, AI, and big data analytics, demonstrating their application in urban planning. Participants will gain an understanding of how these technologies enhance city functionality and help mitigate neighborhood inequalities in combating climate risks.

"From Flying Carpets to Concrete Change: Saving Schouwburgplein from a Temporary Fate!"
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Meeting Point: The Blue Carpet on Schouwburgplein (3012 CL Rotterdam, Netherlands)

This workshop focuses on Rotterdam's Schouwburgplein, exploring strategies to transition temporary interventions (such as the Flying Grass Carpet, programming, events, stage, flower boxes, etc.) threatened by budget cuts into sustainable, lasting transformations. This session aims to address the challenge of transitioning from temporary placemaking initiatives to lasting, permanent changes, using Rotterdam's Schouwburgplein as a prime example. Currently facing financial constraints, the United Schouwburgplein Association struggles to sustain programming, jeopardizing community engagement. The temporary intervention Flying Grass Carpet, now in its 7th year, faces uncertainty due to halted plans for redesign and implementation, exacerbated by budgetary issues. Moreover, leakage in the underlying parking garage and the deteriorating roof/floor of the square necessitate urgent action. Participants will collaborate in brainstorming sessions, focusing on the necessary hardware, software, and organizational structures to revitalize the square for future generations. The collective insights will culminate in a comprehensive proposal to be presented to the Municipality of Rotterdam, seeking support for the revitalization efforts.

Small Big Stories: Co-designing an Inclusive City
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
This session explores  the role and potential of placemaking to drive social inclusion. We share insights of InclusiveCity, a DUT funded research project, exploring critical placemaking in 15 Minutes City transitions in 5 living labs across Europe  (Rotterdam, Oslo, Vienna, Rome and Budapest).  In a world with growing inequalities and urban challenges, it is necessary to dig into our daily practice as placemakers and review aspects of inclusion and trust, leaving no one behind. How can or cannot Placemaking be a tool to benefit local communities and create lasting social change?

InclusiveCity partners invite practitioners, academics, and decision makers to a collective discussion revising aspects of inclusion in public space design and placemaking projects. Concrete examples and tools will support the open dialogue, while the Theory of Change (ToC) framework will help to unpack the buzzwords of inclusion and participation.

What will you learn:
-Unpacking buzzwords by pinning placemaking to more complex community objectives
-Practical methods for bringing “invisible” voices and community assets into your work
-Critical reflections on placemaking and inclusion, to better distinguish “tokenism” vs real power redistribution towards the community and its needs.

The Collaborative Art of Creative Placemaking
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Creative Placemaking focusses on the cocreated program and design of our public spaces via art and culture. The key is to power squares, parks and streets with a diverse a group of local communities as possible. In this way we stimulate inclusivity in our cities from the hearts of our cities.

Creative Placemaking combines the sectors of city development, with that of the arts and civil engagement. This is no small feat. It demands new forms of collaboration, new ways of thinking and innovations in organizational systems.

In this workshop Donica Buisman (founder and CEO of RAUM in Utrecht) will tell more about how she implemented and tested Creative Placemaking at the cultural square of RAUM and the obstacles that she faced. Jeroen Laven (Domain Manager of Culture, Inclusive Living and Media for the municipality of The Hague) will share experiences and challenges in creative placemaking in his work for The Hague. The workshop will be moderated by Bert Determann (cultural placemaking specialist with a long history in working for theaters).

We will explore how we can deepen the innovations that are necessary to make successful and lasting Creative Placemaking possible. We will work on three themes (work together, make it last & create impact) in three rounds (innovations, obstacles & solutions) and with three perspectives (software, orgware & hardware).

Waterfront Worldbuilding: Playful Placemaking for Critical Futures
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Drawing tools from the world of speculative design and filmmaking, join us to gaze out across the water, imagining a world on the shores of a distant future where the waterfront shapes new ways to experience nature and culture in the city.

The built environment as a sector often fails to take a critical long-term view on placemaking, designing for ‘here-and-now’, developing places which can become redundant as soon as they’re built. Waterfront placemaking will be hit especially hard, as sea-level rises impact billions around the world.

We will introduce placemakers to the value of building long term futures-thinking into their process, providing you with tools to become more critical, confident, and imaginative.

The session combines a workshop and a walk. Drawing from tools from our work on Collective Place Futures, we’ll share our unique ‘worldbuilding blueprint’ to create a palette of future places, characters, artefacts and rituals from which you create a news report from the future waterfront. We will then take a walk along the waterfront, to play out our future news report on-location.

While place foresight is serious business, our process takes us there through serious play!

(Do Not) Curb Your Creativity: The Potential of Storytelling & Digitalization in Placemaking Our Streets
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Ever Mixed Analogue and Digital Placemaking?

In this workshop, we bring together two innovative placemaking approaches: the storytelling techniques of STR.AAT and the digital curbside solutions of Coding the Curbs. Both methods have successfully transformed streets across Europe into multifunctional spaces where mobility and social activities thrive side by side.

For the first time, we’re combining these approaches, and you’ll be the first to experiment with this unique mix. You won’t just learn about these methods—you’ll actively try them out yourself. By sharing your own placemaking experiences, you’ll help us refine and enhance these approaches. This workshop is about more than just learning—it’s about contributing to overcoming the challenges and limitations of our solutions.

Are you ready to push the boundaries of what’s possible? Join us in this experimental session and come prepared with one question in mind:
What is the most memorable moment you’ve ever experienced on the street where you currently live? Why?

Get ready to mix, learn, and experiment.

How do we start quality conversations about public spaces and places? Join our workshop if you’d like to pick up tips on becoming a better interviewer. You will learn how a biased interviewer steers the conversation, but a thoughtful Placemaker lets the subject take the lead.

Let’s put our methods to the test in the streets of Rotterdam.

We start with a crash course in “how to have a discussion and ask people about their city” before hitting the streets to conduct the experiment. Afterwards, we can reflect on the experience and exchange feedback and learnings.

Whether it’s a quick question, an interview or an informal discussion there are some basic principals you can follow. Martha and Moa have put together their collective experience as Placemakers to help you become more comfortable in talking to people about their public spaces.

Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Capacity: 20 people (first come, first served)

Starting Point: HBS New Lab

Middelland is a real city neighborhood in Rotterdam West with residents from 172 cultures, rich and poor, low and highly educated, young and old. This diversity is an enormous wealth. At the same time, this diversity does not immediately make a community. 13 very different places in Middelland offer space for meeting and connecting in their own way, through which the richness, the energy of the community can be tapped and accessed. The tour takes you along these places for meeting, such as the Wijkpaleis or the Spoortuin, but also along places that, thanks to the community, have acquired a new form and meaning in the neighborhood.

Community Mural Making
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Urban arts are often used in placemaking projects to promote social change, improve the physical environment, boost local economies, and empower residents to take ownership of their communities.

But what type of urban art are we talking about? What should be its role, if any? And who has the right to create art in the city?

In this session, we will explore these questions collaboratively and answer them by creating a community mural. You will not only examine these questions theoretically but also experience a participatory artistic process.

On Wednesday, you can share your insights on urban arts as you pass by our central station at Katoenhuis. Later in the afternoon, we will have our workshop, where we will delve deeper in the questions in small groups and craft a large collage based on the collected responses.

Throughout Thursday and Friday, all conference attendees are invited to contribute to the evolving mural, adding their own perspectives to it.

Come share your insights about arts and placemaking and witness the transformative power of community art in action!

Launch of PLING (Placemaking In Gebiedsontwikkeling - IN DUTCH)
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
The official launch of PLING explaining why and for whom we are there. Make placemaking an integral part of all phases and forms of area development and not something temporary.

When it comes to placemaking in area development, the challenge lies with the users of the area. With new construction, it is often not clear at the outset who the ultimate users will be (residents, entrepreneurs and passers-by). And with an area transformation or urban renewal you are dealing with existing users who may or may not return after the development and new users who, just like with new construction, are often difficult to map.

The complex issue behind placemaking in area development is therefore what are the wishes of current and future users with regard to the public space and the plinths before, during and after development.

Using concrete cases, PLING demonstrates the value of placemaking in area development. By sharing success factors and setbacks, we make the lessons learned accessible to participants for inspiration and motivation.

We think we have launched a valuable concept with PLING. But we are still at the very beginning. We would like to discuss with the participants how we can help and inspire municipalities, corporations and developers with PLING.

How can we work together to make placemaking an integral part of area development and what is required for this? And what role can PLING play in this?

Reimagining Sustainable & Just Urban Futures Through the Lens of Degrowth
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Join us for an interactive walkshop where we invite you to critically explore placemaking community engagement potentials through the lens of degrowth. We invite you to take a walk around the Katoenhuis area and exchange views on the challenges faced by placemaking practitioners, exploring solutions for more sustainable and just urban futures. Our goal is to identify challenges and solutions to the socio-ecological transformations of public spaces through everyday experiences. We will critically reflect on potential risks associated with placemaking such as gentrification and greenwashing. Lastly, we will consider how placemaking practices could be informed by concepts of degrowth and reflect on solutions that can benefit the participants’ practices in their local cases and examples.

We hope that participants will take away useful insights and meaningful connections, and an overall understanding of the degrowth main concepts.

How can placemaking contribute to actions and processes rooted in sharing and caring?

How can these actions and processes drive radical sustainable changes?

Let’s think about it collectively!

Youth-Driven Urban Transformation: Bridging Education, Inclusion, & Engagement
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
This session will focus on community-driven co-creation processes that engage youth in urban transformation. Our interdisciplinary panel will discuss different approaches to youth engagement drawing from three international case studies, Learning Scapes/Co-Design Studio, Youth-centered Participatory Action (YoPA), and Four+ architects youth projects.

Facilitating an open and inclusive discussion we will delve into youth involvement of different age groups, participatory approaches, challenges, and methodologies for empowering youth in spatial transformation. Our panel will compare differences in approaches while situating the discussion in real-world engagement. Interactive in scope, questions will touch on what connects us, what disconnects us, what we can learn from one another, and how we may expand youth engagement and empowerment in our future work. Focusing on how (rather than why) we engage with youth, this panel will establish the groundwork for a subsequent workshop which will expand on our discussion through hands-on ideation and collaborative system mapping.

Bridge Keepers' Houses: Small Houses, Big Opportunities - By Boat
Wednesday September 25, 2024 14:30 - 17:30 CEST
THIS SESSION TAKES PLACE OUTSIDE OF THE VENUES - THE MEETING POINT is:
Lage Erfbrug, 3024 SE Rotterdam

CAPACITY OF THE SESSION: 20 participants

Have you ever gone out on the water in the historic LeuveHaven of Rotterdam to look at and find out all about bridge keepers' houses? And in the meantime give something good back to the people of Rotterdam? Join this session!!

During the discovery tour by boat, we will show you the beauty of the small vacant heritage, some of which have been (sustainably) repurposed and others are still in use or are empty. We meet the initiators and can ask them anything.

We start at ‘de Lage Erfbrug - where it all started for our foundation by Lotti Hesper. Then we continue by metro and get off at the historic ‘Leuvenhaven’ of Rotterdam. At the Maritiem Museum we hop on the bus boats and meet the initiator of KleanUpKlup 'Sterker door Schoon', they keep the water of Rotterdam clean. We sail further on the water to explore some other bridgekeeper houses in the Rotterdam port area from the boat and we tell you about the past, present and future of the tiny properties. And while we are having fun, we ask the participants to do a Harbor Clean Up, so we leave a clean trail.

Since 2012, the Bridge Keepers' Houses Foundation has built up various expertise
in the field of knowledge center, projects and management and aims to give empty bridge keepers' houses in the Netherlands a new and sustainable purpose.

Trees-as-infrastructure: Valuing and Investing in Nature Beyond Carbon
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 16:45 CEST
Dark Matter Labs is a not-for-profit multidisciplinary group focused on exploring and developing the institutional infrastructure necessary for the civic economy of the 21st century. Our initiative, 'Trees-as-Infrastructure' [Trees-AI], reimagines urban trees and green spaces as fundamental components of urban infrastructure.

Nature-infrastructures are recognised crucial to enhance resilience and support communities in adapting to climate change, yet investment in nature-based solutions are still falling short. Through a blend of technology, and innovative regulatory and accounting practices, Trees-AI aims to create actionable paths to enable diverse stakeholders to come together to find these critical initiatives, thus ensuring their long-term viability and sustainability, and contributing to make urban space more liveable, and foster stronger and healthier communities.

A Critter’s Guide to the City: Exploring More-than-human Placemaking for Urban Biodiversity Engagement
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
As we prepare our cities for the future, facing ongoing crises like climate change, social inequalities, population growth, and resource scarcity, we must also consider the needs of the other beings who we share our urban spaces with. Although urban planners and designers have developed tools to accommodate biodiversity, we still don’t fully understand the needs, desires, habits, and fears of the more-than-human worlds that surround us.

In this workshop, we will explore new ways to connect and strengthen the bond between urban communities and the non-human species that inhabit our cities through design. We will imagine what it’s like to scavenge canals for nest-building materials, navigate between glass towers at high-speed using sonar waves, stretch a lichen body in ultra-slow motion towards a moist crack, or search for food scraps in dark alley garbage bins. Together, we will practice shifting our perspectives, attuning to the more-than-human world, and uncovering the intricate web of entanglements that binds us.

These experiences will be documented and shared through drawing and collaging, and the insights gained will not only deepen our empathy for the more-than-human world but also inform and inspire future designs, guiding urban planners and designers in creating cities that are more inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of all species.

Green Roofs: Unlock the Impact
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Unlock the power of green rooftops in our dynamic session, "Green Roofs: Unlock the Impact", where you will learn the practical tools how to estimate the transformative potential of green rooftops in enhancing urban climate resilience. This dynamic workshop invites urban planners, architects, policymakers, and sustainability enthusiasts to explore the practical applications of green infrastructure through hands-on modelling exercises and collaborative learning.

Participants will be divided into groups to evaluate green rooftops using three distinct tools: stormwater management models, energy performance simulations, and urban heat island mitigation models. Through these activities, you will gain practical insights into how green rooftops can reduce stormwater runoff, improve energy efficiency, and mitigate urban heat islands.

Working with real-world data, you will analyse different scenarios and compare results to understand the multifaceted benefits of green rooftops. By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with tools to advocate for and implement green rooftops in your projects and communities.

This session is your gateway to understanding and leveraging the full potential of green rooftops. Don’t miss this opportunity to network with like-minded professionals, share ideas, and contribute to creating sustainable, livable, and resilient cities. Regenerative Placemaking - Community Resilience Building Via Living Labs
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
This session will demonstrate the core principles of regenerative placemaking, giving several concrete examples of (un)successful interventions. Regenerative development is increasingly considered a possible way forward in the current era of poly-crises, enabling capacity building to be meaningful, place specific and adaptable to all places and people is critical.

A living lab setting often makes multi-year placemaking trajectories possible. It is a place-based collaboration in which residents, universities (research and education), municipalities, (social) entrepreneurs, activists, visitors, Nature and other stakeholders are given a voice. This is achieved via a set of co-design processes aimed at supporting the time and conversation needed for the activities to be planned, implemented, tested, adapted, learned from and shared.

We will share the story of over 20 projects and how they all resulted in the potential of this according. Tools will be shared such as starting from values, how to engage community and how to hold space through conflict – sharing one of our favorite tools how to see anger as caring loudly.

Imagine the city of Happy Proximity
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
The Happy Proximity Fresk is an engaging, thought-provoking and playful workshop created by Chaire ETI researchers (from IAE Paris Sorbonne University). It is a collaborative and creative activity to help participants self-reflect on their daily routines and the spatial and temporal dimensions of their lifestyles at a city, territory, or neighbourhood scale. Participants are invited to play fictitious personae and map their personal weekly activities on a canvas structured around the six social functions (organized by distance to their home, transportation mode and frequency.) It functions as an empowerment mechanism to trigger participants' desires and motivations to transform some of their living habits (usually built over time and therefore mostly never challenged) or practices or the local urban policies if they are decision makers or stakeholders of the city community or governance.

Local Actions, Lasting Vision: Building Places Together
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Join us for an insightful panel on applying placemaking to kickstart long-term and large-scale city projects. This session will reveal how diverse collaborations can drive the success and sustainability of urban projects. Participants will gain valuable insights into how global expertise, academic involvement, local government, artists, and community engagement can come together to drive lasting change.

The session will present the implementation of a pilot project that shows how a long-term and large-scale plan developed by the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro can begin to be translated into meaningful interventions at the neighbourhood level through placemaking and collaboration - featuring experts from the City of Rio de Janeiro, C40 Cities, Superwien Urbanism and LabIT/PROURB UFRJ on a project also supported by IDB.

Additionally, the Centre for Central European Architecture (CCEA) project "Prague Magistrala: Unlocking Potential of Urban Highways" will showcase the revitalization of a 20th-century transport corridor into the vibrant New Prague Boulevard, illustrating how infrastructure repurposing can enhance public spaces and foster community-driven democracy. The project started as a bottom-up initiative and is advocating for a better liveable place for local communities.

Mapping Youth-Driven Urban Transformation
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
This workshop builds upon the foundation laid in our previous panel, which focused on the diverse ways we engage youth in participatory urban transformation. We expand on our discussion through hands-on ideation and collaborative systems mapping, leveraging (professional) practice to reimagine the many roles involved in community planning and design.

Through dissociating roles and responsibilities from professional practice, this workshop aims to extract the specific tasks and actions needed from all stakeholders to effect sustainable, systemic change in the urban environment. This enhances engagement amongst youth and adult stakeholders and facilitates participatory design and decision-making through a redistribution of roles across the action group.

This workshop will take the Masterplan for the Merwehaven neighborhood of Rotterdam as the point of departure for identifying local development goals. Attendees to the Placemaking Week are considered community members and stakeholders of responsible, representative, and sustainable urban transformation. Together, we will brainstorm opportunities for youth to drive urban transformation by taking leading roles in its reimagination and civic experience.

Stories of a Street Walkshop - Unfolding narratives of the Nieuwe Binnenweg
Wednesday September 25, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
NEW MEETING POINT: We will start the Walkshop at the 'beginning' of the Nieuwe Binnenweg - at the Eendrachtsplein. We will meet at the sculpture of the Gnome aka the buttplug

The Stories of a Street Walkshop invites you to participate in unconventional archiving; walking, collecting and drawing the longest shopping street in the Netherlands. With Stories of a Street, the collaborative effort of researchers Leyla Hepsaydir and Rebekka Schächer, you will enter the chaotic and beautiful world of the Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam’s West. This diverse street exists as a complex ecosystem, catering to varied needs and communities at risk from incoming gentrification.

The walkshop is physical and practical, existing in three parts:
1. Walking the full 1.8km of the street
2. Observing the street and collecting stories from street inhabitants
3. Translating these stories into drawings for the unconventional archive

The Walkshop harnesses graphic storytelling to archive the collected oral histories, documenting the street’s people, places, and objects through memories, daily issues and future hopes. Tangible results in the form of your own illustrations will be added to the unconventional archive.

Stories of a Street aims to develop an interdisciplinary method of architectural research, proposing an alternative role for the architect as listener and carer. Leyla and Rebekka aim to open up a conversation on the importance of diverse inner-city areas amongst an interdisciplinary audience, from inhabitants to policy-makers.

Hanging Gardens of Berlin
Wednesday September 25, 2024 17:00 - 17:30 CEST
In this panel discussion I will present a self-initiated project called "Hanging Gardens of Berlin.”

This session offers an alternative perspective on creating green public spaces: by reusing an existing body of water, purifying it and turning the whole area into a living food system.

The participants get an insight into the world of biologically grown fungi-based materials and their potential for creating future public spaces. We will also explore bio-remediation strategies of reusing existing water in our ever thirstier cities.

The presented project is a proposal for a community garden suspended from the ‘Landwehrkanal’, a waterway that runs 10km through Berlin. Anyone interested can grow their own food here, using only water from the canal for irrigation.

In the same process the canal’s water is purified through bio-remediation, letting the entire area become a thriving eco system.

The pots that make up the garden are biologically grown from a fungi-based material.

By presenting this community-based food infrastructure, I invite participants to re-examine our social expectations around both food and water, while proposing ways for creating new spaces of coexistence.

From Neglect to Connection: Digital Placemaking for Palestinian Minority in Israel
Wednesday September 25, 2024 17:00 - 17:30 CEST
Join me in this dynamic session that explores how digital placemaking is transforming neglected public spaces in Palestinian Arab towns within Israel. You'll discover the journey of the Qalb-Al-Balad project, which began as a pilot initiative and is now evolving into a comprehensive placemaking movement led by community members, youth activists, and civil society. This session will reveal the unique challenges and innovative solutions encountered while revitalizing spaces neglected due to political discrimination.

I will also share my personal journey from volunteering in the pilot project to becoming a master’s student whose thesis focuses on digital placemaking, using this project as a case study. Today, as an activist architect, social entrepreneur, and MEPI Alumna, I’ve transitioned from a volunteer to the project coordinator at ACAP, leading this initiative with a deep commitment to my community.

This is an opportunity to learn from a project that bridges the gap between physical and digital spaces and fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment within a marginalized community. This session will offer practical insights into engaging marginalized communities through digital technologies and co-creating public spaces that reflect their identity. Let’s discuss, share, and imagine new possibilities for placemaking in challenging environments!

In 2021, Kostrok entered live in the metaverse to communicate a whole new world through a small character, represented with big glasses and an intrinsic joy that perfectly represents his music: joy, a referential meta-journey halfway between house-disco, italo disco, breaks, electronica, sythnwave and above all, a lot of energy focused on the dance floor.

Benches and Beyond: Strategic Steps for Placemaking
Thursday September 26, 2024 10:00 - 11:15 CEST
This session explores the transformative practice of placemaking through a series of dynamic, TED-style talks. Each speaker will have 12 minutes to share practical examples and insights. They will illustrate the journey from conceptual inspiration to real-world implementation, highlighting how modest beginnings, like benches, can evolve into significant community landmarks and large project initiatives. This panel aims to inspire attendees with actionable strategies for creating engaging, functional, and vibrant public spaces. Let us discover how innovative placemaking can foster community connection and revitalisation on both small and large scales. Speakers are encouraged to share how they are applying the principles of placemaking on a larger scale. Please focus on one or two clear examples that outline the storyline and process, avoiding a broad array of examples.

Thursday September 26, 2024 11:30 - 14:30 CEST
Placemaking Collaboration On Location: Work will be done where it matters and where placemaking is applied. Meet future placemakers and co-create...

As part of a student-Placemaking-Hackathon session, daily meet-ups are organised - welcome anytime between 11.30 am till 14.30 pm - on the vacant site of the former Keilewerf. In joining, you will contribute to the development of this unique place in M4H, get to know parties that are active in the area and learn from the inspiring history of the Keilewerf initiative.

In the M4H district in Rotterdam, a collective of creative makers has been active in the Keilewerf for 10 years. A success story that unfortunately took a different turn as a result of a disastrous fire in June 2023. The story of the Keilewerf wille be shown in a retrospective exhibition called “10 years of Keilewerf”.

Approximately 100 students from the minor Urban Development and the minor FM & Urban Placemaking will engage in developing concepts for the Keilewerf site. Kunst & Complex location (Keileweg 28) is our homebase. The results of the collaboration between participants of the PMW and students will be part of the retrospective exhibition.

Create Together Communities Through Greener Spaces & Gardens in Cities
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
We want to improve the quality of life in neighbourhoods to make more places greener. As cities and housing corporations we see a lot of places that can be better used. Public spaces and semi-public places around social housing have sometimes bad quality and are not well used.

Together with our citizens and tenants we start processes to design more attractive, healthier and greener places to make more places for community, to come together, to play and give more space for biodiversity, meetings, playgrounds and climat adaption.

In different countries and cities we meet the same challenges. Cities and housing corporations from Portugal, the Netherlands, France and United Kingdom will show in this workshops you some good examples in our cities and together we will share our challenges and questions. How do you like to contribute to greener the areas and built communities? Which steps can you follow to engage several stakeholders to invest in greener spaces? Can you share with us your good examples? Come and join our workshop and participate with your knowledge and experiences

Learning From Failure: Intentions, Expectations & Risks
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
For any project to be a success, a placemaker has to find common ground between different aspirations and priorities by being the driver towards a common goal and outcomes. In a university context, students have to balance the requirements of their course in addition to satisfying the needs and expectations of the stakeholders they are working with.

In this session we will explore and develop the tools to measure success, be it learning outcomes forstudents in an educational context or spatial and social outcomes for communities. Success and failureare closely linked, and can be simultaneous. A project that was an utter failure in terms of delivery can provide the best educational outcome for a student or practitioner, and vice versa. A short term failure might lead to long term gain by planting the seed for something greater to happen. Equally, a short term success can easily evaporate.

Through case studies we will explore the good, and not so good, of placemaking. Through interactive workshop discussions we will identify potential risks and opportunities that will assist students and professional placemakers alike to benchmark their output by framing expectations against defined criteria providing invaluable learnings for future projects.

SNFCC- Thinking Big & ‘Small’
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
How does a mega-project, in term of architecture, offering and visitation create meaningful micro- connections on a community level? The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is housing two of Greece’s most historical institutions, the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece alongside one of the city’s’ newest and most innovative green areas, the Stavros Niarchos Park. Boasting its Renzo Piano state of the art premises and having expanded the city’s cultural map beyond the metropolitan center of Athens the SNFCC is simultaneously considered by many an extension of their house’s yard. Practices, experiments, and challenges in creating a landmark that feels like a place for all.

What Do You Think of Bridgekeepershouses? - Knowledge Session
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
THIS SESSION TAKES PLACE OUTSIDE OF THE VENUES - THE MEETING POINT IS:
Koningsdam 1, 3011 TN Rotterdam

Bridge keepers' houses are increasingly lonely and empty because bridges are centrally controlled via cameras. As a result, the social role of the bridge keeper is increasingly being lost. These sympathetic, small spaces (and sometimes also enormous bridge cellars under the road surface) are increasingly gaining new meaning in the Netherlands as exhibition space, art/culture/community space, hairdresser, hotel room and more. Since 2012, the Bridge Keepers' Houses Foundation has built up various expertise in the field of knowledge center, projects and management and aims to give empty bridge keepers' houses in the Netherlands a new and sustainable purpose.

In the Netherlands we estimate that there are approximately 1000 bridge keepers' houses. But what about the rest of Europe?

The Bridge Keepers' Houses Foundation aims to give vacant bridge keepers' houses a new purpose in the Netherlands. We want to use the power of the Placemaking Community to come up with a new destination for one of the vacant bridge keepers' houses in Rotterdam. So we do a brainstorm on a very special location ship ramp ‘Koningspoort’ We involve the municipality of Rotterdam, which owns the bridge keeper's house, with multiple civil servants from different departments.

Thursday September 26, 2024 12:30 - 13:00 CEST
Can placemaking supports better aging, inspire new health professional vocation or even help us die with dignity?

Nursing the Care
Integrating health in Multi-Generational Community Living

Nursing the Care is a visionary initiative, set on weaving a seamless fabric of health services, care workers, and comprehensive care into existing residential spaces where they are most needed. By caring for the people that will take care of us we can create a positive loop effect that can include older adults and multiple generations. This is what we want to do in the social housing area of Axelborg in Denmark where approximately 603 residents live in 284 tenancies.

Edicola - What Culture Do We Want To Be Capital Of?
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:00 CEST
The "Edicola" project by Line Culture and Associates Architecture reimagines traditional urban newsstands as vibrant community hubs, launched in the context of Bergamo Brescia being named the Italian Capital of Culture 2023. This project exemplifies innovative public space revitalization by turning small structures into dynamic focal points for social interaction and cultural engagement.

The session will explore the design philosophy and practical implementation of Edicola, highlighting how these structures integrate cultural, social, and economic elements to create multifunctional spaces. Through detailed case studies and discussions, participants will gain valuable insights into the significant impact of small-scale projects on urban environments.

Key aspects include:

1. Design Insights: The creative process of transforming newsstands into community spaces.
2. Community Engagement: How Edicola fosters social cohesion and supports local economies.
3. Collaborative Approaches: The importance of collaboration between architects, local artists, and city officials in realizing successful urban projects.
4. Practical Applications: Real-world examples and strategies for similar placemaking initiatives.

This session will showcase how the Edicola project sets new standards in urban design, contributing to more connected and livable cities through innovative, community-focused architecture, inspired by Bergamo Brescia's cultural leadership in 2023.

Taking Mixed-Use to the Max: Making The Case For The 1.5-Minute Place
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:00 CEST
The notion of the 15-minute city has become a prominent approach thanks to its ability to create walkable and sustainable neighborhoods. Building on that approach, this 30-minute session aims to delve deeper into the idea of applying mixed-use and close-proximity principles on a smaller scale.

During the session, we’ll:
- Highlight case examples of the best mixed-use spaces we’ve seen yet
- Share concrete tactics for mixing up your places; combining offices with schools, shopping malls with libraries, and airports with forests.

This vision challenges traditional standards of zoning and spatial organization, advocating for a seamless integration of work, education, culture, play, and nature – within the same close quarters. At its core, the conversation is driven by the belief that by embracing the 1.5-minute place concept, we can create more inclusive, liveable and loveable places that enrich the lives of those having a relation to them.

Co-Designing Climate-Resilient & Inclusive Neighbourhoods
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
How can we engage and ensure citizens, including the less commonly heard voices, shape how their neighbourhoods are redesigned to be healthier, more climate resilient and great places to live?

During our discussion and to try and answer this, you will hear about challenges and best practices from 3 European projects, and from Paris to Asia we’ll learn how cities are bringing nature to streets, squares and schools, all with a common objective to co-design more climate resilient and inclusive neighbourhoods. The session will share how to reconnect cities with nature, improve health and wellbeing and how these practices are helping communities to adapt and prepare for extreme climate events.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panellists focused on the different ways each project is trying to respond to this question! From focusing on co-designing spaces with less heard voices, using proximity planning to address citizens needs and dreams, using citizen science to create more resilient spaces in cities, neighbourhoods and schoolyards, to embedding health and wellbeing into the design process.

Representing projects ReGreeneration, LIFE CRITICAL, UP2030, and OASIS Schoolyards, City representatives from Bradford, UK, Thessaloniki Greece, and Dordrecht, the Netherlands, as well as C40 Cities and Resilient Cities Network will be present.

Expedition: Future(s) of the Rotterdam Service Courts
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Meeting Point: Het Industriegebouw, Goudsesingel 66, 3011 KD Rotterdam
Ending point: Jonker Franshof

Service courts are the hidden backstreets of the center of Rotterdam. They are part of the post-war city-block where living, working and shopping were interwoven in a new typology. On the scale of the inner city the service courts form a circuit of supply roads and transhipment areas. With the shift from goods to services and new urban logistics, the supply function has become less dominant. This, in combination with the trend to give cars less space, calls for a re-evaluation of the service courts; as a reservoir of public space for climate adaptation and encounters.

During this session the participants will explore Rotterdam in a totally different way and we will collectively discover the potential of these public spaces by questioning: How can these underused spaces, with a total area of 25 soccer fields, be used to increase the diversity of public spaces, routes and living environments?

We end the tour in a service court which functions as one example of temporary activation; we will discuss the strong points of this interventions and the points of improvement. This reflection will be a valuable part of our overall evaluation of this pilot project (running during the month of September).

Nature Explorers Walkshop: Discovering Rotterdam's Hidden Residents
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Join us for the "Nature Explorers Walkshop," a unique and immersive adventure designed especially for children and their caregivers through Rotterdam's urban landscape! Participants will embark on a playful exploration of the hidden world of non-human actors that call our city home. This interactive walkshop offers a hands-on experience, engaging with the city's trees, water canals, and native plants and animals through fun challenges and activities.

Participants will receive a "Nature Explorer Kit" containing a map, a booklet with profiles of non-human personas, and materials for the journey. At various exploration stations, they'll encounter different non-human actors like trees, birds, and flowers, learning fascinating facts about their roles in the ecosystem and completing related tasks.

Through this engaging session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity, urban resilience, and the importance of coexisting with nature in urban spaces. They'll discover how these natural elements mitigate climate change impacts and enhance community well-being.

By participating, children and families will develop a greater appreciation for Rotterdam's natural heritage and be inspired to advocate for sustainable placemaking practices. This session not only promotes environmental awareness but also fosters a sense of stewardship and connection to the local environment, making it a must-attend event at Placemaking Week Europe 2024.

Public & Private Sector: Making Placemaking Last
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
This session digs into the dynamics between the public and private sectors in sustainable placemaking. By examining cases from throughout Europe, we will critically assess the business case for placemaking, and what strategic partnerships can do to elevate local initiatives and foster sustainable change without losing touch with grassroots communities.

The panel will discuss:
-What role do businesses play in sustainable social infrastructure and tactical urbanism?
-Who is responsible for placemaking and how should its use and impact be measured?
-Can strategic public-private partnerships create places for people and drive positive change?
-How can we achieve sustainable long-term collaborations at the local level?

Through an interactive session with participants, we will explore the benefits and challenges of public-private partnerships, their impacts on communities, and strategies for achieving lasting positive outcomes. This will include a debate focussed on concrete examples of placemaking practice, exploring whether placemaking is repackaging existing offers or establishing a new discipline that challenges the status quo and promotes people-focused urban development.  Participants will gain insights into concrete examples of public-private partnerships, effective organizational models, and how to continue to manage partnerships over the long term.

InclusiveCity: Making Inclusive Third Spaces
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Inclusivity is the cornerstone of thriving urban spaces. It’s about creating environments
where everyone, regardless of background, ability, or identity, feels welcome and
valued. In cities, inclusivity is crucial, it fosters community, enhances quality of life, and
ensures that all residents can participate in and benefit from the vibrancy of urban life.
Rijnhaven, and more specifically Luxor Theatre are two of the most relevant locations in
Rotterdam when it comes to urban developments and leisure, and both are striving for
the implementation of inclusivity.

The session will begin inside the Luxor Theatre, where a speech from the theatres
general director will be held to share insights on how places like Café Dox are essential
for fostering diversity and connection. This will be held in the iconic Rijnfoyer, to allow
for a breathtaking view of Rijnhaven, and its new developments.

Following this speech, a second speaker will join to share more detailed insights on the
topic of inclusivity and its importance in society, with the goal of informing and sharing
knowledge from experts.

The second part of the session will be an interactive activity. This experience will allow
for the visitors to engage with inclusivity firsthand, and to explore activities that
challenge the understanding of accessibility, community engagement, and urban
design. It’s an opportunity to think creatively about how we can make Rijnhaven a space
where everyone feels they belong.

Common Ground: Game Plans for Neighbourhood Co-Creation
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Initiating bottom-up change in the city through transforming neighbourhood spaces into places of collective production, use and governance entails multiple phases: forming a consortium of stakeholders, activating a space, addressing organisational, programmatic, design and governance aspects. Our session simulates a placemaking process facilitated in a two-phase interactive role-playing workshop that invites participants to create self-organised scenarios for co-design and co-governance of neighbourhood spaces.

Phase 1: THE COMMON CATALOGUE EXPERIMENT
Participants assume roles of urban actors with different interests and levels of influence. The session explores effective coalitions for bottom-up development and their ability to achieve communal goals. Imagine a game of “Clue”, but the mystery is “who will decide the fate of our common urban spaces?”.

Phase 2: COMMONING THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
The formed coalitions of actors co-create solutions for designing and governing neighbourhood common spaces that meet their communal needs. Following a card-game roadmap, they explore effective programmatic and design aspects that foment the sustainability of the common spaces over time.

The workshop inspires participants to pursue local change in their community and empowers them with skills and tools to achieve community-driven local development: from forming sustainable coalitions, to achieving their common visions through negotiations and trade-offs.

Placemaking With Local & Global Networks
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Learn from global placemaking network leaders and emerging networks, and discuss strategies for growing the collective learning, advocacy and impact for national and agenda placemaking networks and campaigns.

The PlacemakingX Global Placemaking Summit recently convened 150 of the world's placemaking leaders in Mexico City to set the course for the global placemaking movement and supporting the 30+ regional placemaking networks with emerging cross-cutting global agendas.

This moment represents a major evolution point for placemaking, since we launched the movement over10 years ago from Project for Public Spaces. We started PlacemakingX in 2019, almost 5 years ago, with the goal of further decentralizing and networking the movement globally, and have since seen strong self-organization around the very adaptive and nimble regional and national networks.

Informed by, and looking to support, these networks, the next evolution of placemaking movement will include cross-cutting agendas that are being formed with similar structures and process to the regional networks. As with the national networks, each agenda has leaders that have emerged to form each agenda network. While continuing to be open to additional leadership, these leaders are helping to take responsibility for guiding and growing the learning, advocacy and action of the network.

We invite placemaking leaders to join these regional and agenda networks to help them realize their potential. These networks and agendas are all designed to keep each-other supported, challenged and inspired.

Each part of the world is leading the placemaking conversation from different strengths.
Whether from a dominant discipline, sector, or demographic, every strength has much to offer, teach the rest of the world.

During the workshop, attendees will participate in a unique board game that encourages a creative dialogue where all voices are heard and common interests and disagreements are addressed, resulting in a plan expressing that dialogue.

In addition, we’ll harness cutting-edge technology to gather ideas and input from participants, processing them through AI to visualize their potential impact on the urban environment. This innovative approach demonstrates how community input can play a meaningful role in shaping the urban environment, improving the quality of urban development, and empowering communities in creating places. Our workshop emphasizes the vital role of community involvement in urban planning and the power of gamification in creating meaningful engagement.

By participating, you'll gain insights into effective participatory design techniques and experience how user input can significantly contribute to improving our cities. Schedule: Introduction and Overview Presentation of the case-study area Interactive Workshops AI-Powered Idea Visualization Group Discussion and Q&A The future of our cities is green, human-centric, and collaborative. As a decision-maker, you cannot afford to fall behind. Join us to lead the way in better cities!

Towards Community Cohesion: The Power of Resident-Led Walks
Thursday September 26, 2024 15:15 - 15:45 CEST
This session provides a case study of Jane’s Walk - a rare example of placemaking that is truly community-driven. It sees everyday residents and city-dwellers – rather than just planners and architects – as the true experts on their cities and neighbourhoods. It acts on the idea that cities can and should be self-organised, by encouraging residents to lead their own walking tours on any topic they like, and encouraging cities around the globe to lead their own Jane’s Walk festivals in whatever way they see fit.

In this session, you will learn how Jane’s Walk has established itself as a global, grassroots, community-led initiative. We will share stories and anecdotes on the power it has to build connections across the 500+ cities in which it operates, celebrating the legacy of Jane Jacobs and her contributions to urban studies and city planning.

Come and get inspired by this movement – a simple yet incredibly effective means of fostering vibrant and inclusive cities. You might discover new perspectives and principles to apply in your own placemaking endeavours.

Social Impact, Place & a Bit of Persuasion - Insights from Australia
Thursday September 26, 2024 15:15 - 15:45 CEST
How do we encourage organisations to see engaging communities around place as more than a ‘nice to have’ - or worse, as something to avoid for fear of basic design feedback? An answer may be in using market-focused organisational mechanisms such as ‘ESG’ and ‘corporate social responsibility’.

This session will highlight examples from Australia which we hope will bring new perspectives on engagement and community development, demonstrating ways projects can harness organisational aspirations and commitments around ‘the S in ESG’ (i.e. social impact) to help drive better local engagement and a more inclusive place outcomes.

The session will be focused on a new methodology designed to help organisations better understand what the new consultancy Amplifier Collective refers to as ‘the five P’s’ - place, people, policy, politics and partnerships - and drive more targeted local responses to social impact and engagement. These might include strategies and partnerships for purpose-driven procurement, community development, corporate giving/volunteering, creating employment pathways, and economic development – and importantly find
ways to build internal capacity to deliver places for people.

Hometown Architect: Catalysts for Community-Led Town Regeneration
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 16:45 CEST
Hometown Architect is a unique initiative by the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) that brings together local architects and community stakeholders to explore possibilities to regenerate their town centres. This is a community-led placemaking approach that recognises the unique value of each town and village and understands that local knowledge is key in the effort to revitalise town centres. By encouraging connections and combining the power of shared imaginations, Hometown Architect acts as a catalyst for change.

Hometown Architect aligns with the objectives of the recent Town Centre First Policy in Ireland and aims to support its delivery by facilitating local communities to participate in a co-design process to envision the sustainable regeneration of their town centres.

Participants in this session will have the opportunity to hear about the development of community-led placemaking projects in the Irish context, looking at the challenges and opportunities. Hearing from Vanessa Menegaldo, manager of IAF’s ‘Reimagine’ placemaking programme and Helena McElmeel, the architect that worked on one of the projects, participants will have the chance to learn about the work developed and the methods used to engage with community stakeholders in the process of transforming towns to make them better places to live, work and enjoy.

Sê Bairrista - Improving Public Space & Social Cohesion
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 16:45 CEST
Through Sê Bairrista (a project developed by a consortium of an architecture office, NGOs, community groups, and public companies, and funded by European and national partners) R/C proposed the qualification of 5 public spaces in a municipal housing neighborhood in Lisbon for activities such as playing, cultivating, chatting, or debating, aiming to improve the quality of public space and increase social cohesion in its different dimensions: sense of belonging, relationships of trust between residents, and between residents and local institutions.

The project was monitored and evaluated by the Lisbon Institute of Social Sciences and had the following impact: 30% increase in trust in institutions; 26% increase in social cohesion and the feeling of belonging to the territory and the group; 29% increase in interest in participating in citizen initiatives; 32% increase in the frequency of use of public spaces.

With this short presentation, we would like to discuss questions of methodology of co-design and impact assessment involving different groups and local entities and the importance of design in creating a sense of belonging in the specific context of a municipal housing neighborhood.

How to Enable Climate Resilient area Development with Civic Participation?
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST

Co-Creating Social & Green Places for Outdoor Work
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Outdoor work and appealing workspaces outdoors foster creativity, social interactions, and well-being, while enriching a city's network of public spaces. This workshop focuses on collaboratively designing green and sociable outdoor work areas and raising awareness about their importance.

The session highlights the overlooked aspect of placemaking and vibrant cities: work and workplaces. As an example, 1 out of 10 companies are located in one of the 3800 business parks in the Netherlands and almost a third of the jobs can be found in such environments.

In the session participants get insights about the benefits of outdoor work by the founder of Outdoor Office Day Ioana Biris and how the movement promotes sustainable urban design, a more creative working culture, well-being and nature connection. Päivi Raivio & Daniel Bumann from Parkly, an innovative urban furniture company creating green and social places, will present how green modular pocket parks have changed outdoor spaces in work and study environments and present solutions for turning grey spaces into vibrant places.

The interactive workshop session focuses on co-creating guidelines and ideas for great, connected outdoor working environments. A light hand book will be published after Placemaking Week by the session team.

Building Creative Cities: a Practitioner’s Guide to Reclaiming Space for Arts and Culture in Cities and the Public Realm
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Cities around the world, often face a chronic shortage of affordable creative space for makers, artists, musicians and creatives. And, what little space that is left, is often being taken over for development forcing creatives away from their existing communities in a perpetual cycle. Yet quite often, space that could be utilised for vibrant creative use is hiding in plain sight; from vacant buildings, offices and retail shops to carparks, laneways and the public realm.

In this panel you’ll heart about several incredible urban space transformation projects, led by art communities and placemaking practitioners from around the world and how they create and incubate community, build interesting bridges and connections, infuse creative ideas and develop incredibly vibrant partnerships that make our cities wonderful places to live.
You’ll hear about tips and tricks for working with landlords, building owners and statutory authorities, temporary intervention models and unique ‘meanwhile use’ of vacant space, ‘bending the rules’ as well as long term governance and funding models.

Hear from Trans Europe Halls, one of the largest and oldest cultural networks in Europe, and a pioneer organisation worldwide when it comes to retrofitting abandoned urban spaces for arts and culture as well as several practitioners from Australia, the UK and France in an inspiring panel session.

Creative Placemaking: Development Without Displacement Through Art & Culture
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Many communities have enjoyed the benefits of new development leveraging art and culture, or creative placemaking (CPM), but have also seen the pitfalls, such as displacement. Millions of people around the globe are annually displaced due to wars/conflict, natural disasters, and economic instability.   But displacement also occurs from new real estate development that can bring welcome amenities and new energy to a neighborhood.  New development can also drive property values and rents up, forcing out those less able to pay, often vulnerable, diverse populations.

This session raises awareness about advertent and inadvertent displacement in the built environment and strategies, leveraging art and culture, to avoid displacement. Studies have shown that cities or places that are diverse and inclusive outperform others that are not. So avoiding or limiting displacement is essential for successful place-led development.

Participants will gain knowledge through research, case studies, and interactive Q&A about CPM best practices and how to employ them to enhance the value of place and deliver benefits that accrue to all stakeholders - community residents and businesses, developers and their partners, and government. Delivered by a panel of subject matter experts living and working in the US and Europe, this session looks back for historical context and lessons learned, and forward to a possible future pregnant with vibrant, healthy places.

City Flows: Discovering the City with Our Senses
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
This participatory walkshop is designed to explore the connection between the city and the water. Through walking, observing and engaging with other placemakers, we look and map the presence and traces how water forms part of the city.

The first half of our walkshop, will take the participants to a playground of public space. Through a ‘Walk&Sense’ session we will explore the surrounding environment by using our senses. This experiential exercise will emphasise how we perceive, sense, frame and construct the places we inhabit.

The session will conclude with a joint reflection and analogue data visualisation exercise. This will allow participants to share their experiences and insights, showcasing the traces, marks, and narratives related to water that define our cityscape in the public space itself.

The walkshop will be conducted by the members of the Bosch Alumni Network’s Placemaking Impact Field.

The Afrikaanderwijk has its own strengths and challenges: it has the highest unemployment rate of Rotterdam, but it also has a lot of values, in Culture, Creativity and Craftmanship. These talents are deployed by the neighborhood cooperative in order to keep the benefits local. We'll walk through the neighbourhood, visiting the circular recycling station on the market which is run by the neighbourhood cooperative, and we'll visit the community garden. What does it mean to self organize in a gentrifying area?

Crafting Utopias: Storytelling and Service Design for Placemaking
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Join us for a workshop that combines the speculative power of storytelling with the hands-on perspective of service design, introducing a narrative-driven approach to placemaking.

In this session, you'll explore a fictional future neighborhood through the daily lives of its inhabitants—humans, plants, animals, and insects. Inspired by the children’s storybook format, participants will design their own story books encouraging radical participation in their own fictional scenarios and imagining what would make our heroes’ utopian lives fulfilling and happy.

As we dive into these stories, insights about community life will emerge, highlighting potential issues and opportunities for improvement. Combining sketching and storytelling with a systemic approach, we will explore how the crafted stories intertwine, making the multiple factors involved in placemaking emerge, and highlighting potential action points. What resources, activities, and connections, are necessary to make the narratives become reality? What systemic changes are required?

This workshop explores the complexity of community-based placemaking processes, weaving storytelling and design-driven methodologies to generate systemic change towards a collective sense of place.

Participatory Urban Design with Augmented Reality
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:45 CEST
Reimagine the Keilepand area together using real-time augmented reality (AR)! Ahead of Metvibee's planned launch in October, we're hosting a workshop at the Placemaking Week Europe where you can experience how AR can contribute to urban co-design.

This workshop uses collaborative AR functions of Metvibee where participants can draw and place objects (street furniture etc.) and see live updates of the co-design.

After that, we'll end the workshop with a deeper discussion on the challenges and opportunities of using AR in participatory city making, how power relations can be challenged and addressed by AR, and how an AR tool's user experience and interface can be more inclusive and contribute towards mainstreaming participatory design in how cities are developed.

Bog Bothy - Spaces for Shelter, Retreat & Deep Engagement with a Changing Landscape
Thursday September 26, 2024 17:00 - 17:30 CEST
Join us for a down-to-earthly presentation of "Bog Bothy," a transformative placemaking project collaborating with Irish peatland communities to co-create bothies—spaces for shelter, retreat, and profound engagement with the evolving landscape. As Ireland transitions from peat extraction, this session delves into how architecture can uphold historical connections with the bog while safeguarding it for future generations.

With one-sixth of Ireland covered in bogs, the end of peat extraction marks a major environmental and social shift. This session addresses the challenges of this transition and issues of spatial justice for rural communities. By documenting historical and contemporary peatland architecture, "Bog Bothy" counters exclusionary narratives of 'wilderness' and 'rewilding' through understanding bogs as deeply cultural landscapes. It highlights the adaptive reuse of materials and knowledge from the peat industry, presenting bothies as symbols of positive change and community aspiration.

Participants will discover innovative methods to reconnect with post-industrial peatlands, gaining insights into architectural solutions that support environmental stewardship and community resilience. Bog Bothy is a collaboration between the Irish Architecture Foundation’s ‘Reimagine’ Placemaking Programme and 12th Field.

This project is uniquely positioned to inspire and educate festival attendees about innovative architectural responses to local design challenges and environmental transformation.

Food is a Place: Making Gardens and Markets into Community Hubs
Thursday September 26, 2024 17:00 - 17:30 CEST
Farmers' markets and gardens provide fresh produce, physical and mental health to citizens. But the accessibility, attractiveness, social infrastructure and programming of these sites varies widely in their effectiveness to equitably attract and serve citizens. Learn best practices from around the world and from Ryan's own food system work.

During the session, we will cover:

Accessibility: Examining how different markets and gardens ensure access for all community members, including marginalized groups like seniors, children, refugees, low-income populations, micro-businesses, etc.

Attractiveness: Discussing strategies to make these sites more appealing and engaging for the public from wayfinding to social furniture, programming and layout.

Social Infrastructure: Exploring the social components that support community engagement and interaction at these sites including creating a "town square" feel.

Programming: Sharing successful programming ideas that enhance the value and utility of markets and gardens.

Bridges to be Built & The Empathic Debate Club
Thursday September 26, 2024 18:00 - 20:00 CEST
Building bridges between people is crucial in today’s interconnected world. Trust and empathy are the foundations of these bridges, enabling us to collaborate effectively and create inclusive, resilient communities. Bridging organisations is particularly important as it facilitates the sharing of resources, knowledge, and best practices, fostering innovation and enhancing the impact of collective efforts. To foster these qualities, we must explore innovative partnerships that transcend traditional boundaries—not just between organisations but also across concepts and communities. For instance, how can the 15-minute city model, with its focus on creating accessible neighbourhoods, and tactical urbanism, through its low-cost, community-driven projects, empower individuals and communities to take ownership of their spaces? By integrating these ideas with broader strategies for trust-making, we can cultivate environments where collaboration flourishes, and empathy becomes the driving force for positive change. Additionally, building bridges across diverse communities encourages a sense of shared purpose and mutual support, which is vital for addressing complex urban challenges. When communities come together, they can pool their unique strengths and perspectives, leading to more sustainable and innovative solutions that benefit everyone.
Following a discussion on building bridges between organisations, communities and across concepts, we invite you and members of the audience to join us for our evening activity, the Empathic Debate Club. Here, we will delve into fun and thought-provoking debates centred around our four core festival themes. Together, we’ll explore the intersections and challenges that shape our collective future, and challenge ourselves to find common ground between polarised positions. Are you brave enough to participate in the debate?

Four core themes (for the debate):
(1) Creating place and making it last
(2) Climate adaptation: together towards change
(3) Living with water: the flow of the city
(4) Local power and the battle of space

Friday September 27, 2024 11:30 - 14:30 CEST

Diving into Afrikaandermarkt, Part 2: Workshop
Friday September 27, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
This is a deeper dive into the findings from the Wednesday session Diving into Afrikaandermarkt, Part 1: Field Trip*

This workshop explores the hidden power of Market Squares as dynamic, multi-use public spaces, using the Afrikaandermarkt as an interactive case study. The market is located on Afrikaanderplein, a large park in the middle of the multi-ethnic Feijenoord neighborhood in Rotterdam South.

We'll first explore the big picture with a short presentation, "Squares are the Hearts of Communities, Markets Their Soul: How Cities Put Them Together and Thrive." Then, people who attended the field trip on Wednesday will report back some of their ideas and opportunities for the Afrikaanderplein based on their Market Place Audits results. We'll then set pen to paper, breaking into a few small groups to explore the placemaking potential of the square and market and identify the potential for Rotterdam to further public engagement about this site.

*This workshop is recommended even if you missed the field trip on Wednesday, as we will cover the general principles of placemaking for market squares and demonstrate how to apply them to the local site.

The Art of Tranquil Placemaking
Friday September 27, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
Have you ever considered to do nothing in a place? To strenghten the tranquility, quietness and natural serenity? What exactly would you do? How would you define tranquility and what it means to people visiting a place?

Dive into the art of creating tranquil public spaces during our workshop, learning about the factors underpinning tranquility. We draw upon over 6 years of working experience in the field and developing tools, theories, instruments, and policies from national to local level. Based on an extensive cooperation between Flanders and the Netherlands, we explore the essence of serene spaces for both individual well-being and community vitality.

The absence of tranquility can exacerbate health issues, with noise pollution ranking as the second leading cause of environmental-related health problems. Through an immersive outdoor activitie, participants will analyse firsthand the impact of various sounds on their well-being. By examining case studies and engaging in practical exercises, attendees will gain insights into crafting environments conducive to tranquility, fostering healthier and more harmonious communities "a perfect balance between peaceful and vibrant places“.

Join our workshop and get into action creating more tranquil places as a counter movement to busier public spaces.

Artist Driven Development BRUTUS
Friday September 27, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
When no one wanted to believe in M4H, let alone live there, artist Joep van Lieshout saw the potential of this area. After moving in 1987 and starting AVL-ville in 2001, he decided to do something big here in 2008. Something that makes a difference and that benefits the city and actually everyone. Not a modest short-term initiative, but grand, compelling and forever.  Now, a decade and years of intensive preparations later, the preconditions are there for the realization of Brutus.

Since 2018, AVL has been working with developer RED Company (Nanne de Ru) to realize this project. The time has now come to draw up a definitive plan in 2024 for the development of this globally unique project of homes, studios and a museum. The museum is secured for eternity through an innovative business case. The Museum will become a long-term public institution for the city of Rotterdam through a foundation.

The aim of the session is to introduce participants to the ideas behind Brutus and its innovative approach to creating a vibrant place that will remain affordable in the future for cultural institutions, artists and its residents. It will be an interactive session with ample opportunity for questions.

In this session, we cut through the confusion that surrounds storytelling, exploring what it looks like in practice in placemaking and urban development projects. We will dive into actionable strategies for how to use storytelling to hear the stories of citizens before, during and after a project and discover how to define an impactful narrative of change and use it to connect stakeholders.

The session has three parts:
First, it starts with practical insights on how various communication forms (audio, visual, text) can be used to make placemaking and urban development processes more understandable, accessible, and impactful for citizens, professionals, and other stakeholders.

Then, participants will take part in an interactive demonstration of a new methodology for impactful and effective citizen participation, creating AI-powered stories in real time that reflect citizen experiences in our living environments.

The session ends with a closing panel discussion addressing how we can humanize our communication to reach all people, ethical considerations of AI, and human biases in storytelling, among other topics.

A Human-Centred Design Approach to Urban Streets Transformation
Friday September 27, 2024 12:30 - 13:00 CEST
This session aims at presenting the methodology and assessment tools we developed as well as demonstrating their ability to provide human-centred solutions to the many
challenges faced by urban designers on urban projects and street redesigns.

It will explore the importance of collecting a robust set of human-oriented data while making sure to carefully listen to the community sentiment in order to better informed the vision and concept design, and shape spaces that reflect the diverse identities of locals.

The session will highlight how this transferable methodology can assist municipalities into implementing modern and inclusive street design while future-proofing the urban landscape, fostering active mobility and creating vibrant places.

Through the examination of our team’s proposal for the Boulevard de Sebastopol in Paris, the session will showcase a textbook example of urban battle for space in a context where the old urban forces hope to keep intact their share of the cake by hindering transformative change.

Empathy as a Catalyst: Enhancing Stakeholder Collaboration in Placemaking for Systemic Change
Friday September 27, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Join us for a workshop focused on cultivating empathy to drive systemic change in placemaking. This session addresses several critical challenges: the fields within the "quadruple helix"—academia, industry, government, and civil society—often struggle to collaborate effectively, define their roles in urban transformation, and ensure that placemaking efforts are genuinely inclusive and reflective of the communities they serve. By bridging these challenges and aligning aspirations, the workshop aims to foster more cohesive, impactful, and inclusive collaborations. Participants will gain practical skills to enhance empathy in their professional and personal interactions, making it easier to work across these diverse fields and engage with the full spectrum of community stakeholders. We will be using tools such as empathy mapping, role-playing, and incorporating approaches from systemic thinking to deepen your understanding of collaborative innovation, community engagement, and ensuring that all voices are heard in the placemaking process. The Greek office of STIPO and Among, two NPOs based in Greece, bring together their knowledge and experience to offer an interdisciplinary and experiential workshop that will provide theoretical insights and practical tools that the participants could bring back to their own context.

Public Innovation & Participation for Urban Shift : Two Systemic Approaches from Nantes & Milan
Friday September 27, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
The climate, social and ecological challenges are urging us to make a major urban shift, therefore questioning collectively our practices and urban lifestyles. Through the cases of Nantes and Milan, we’ll explore how those two cities are facing those crucial stakes and how they are shifting their practices for more transversal, participative and sustainable urban policies.

For more than 15 years, the Metropolis of Nantes has been a frontrunner in promoting and making citizen participation an integrated and systemic process within the design of its public policies and urban renewal projects. We’ll present how Nantes Metropolis implemented an unprecedented large-scale citizen debate on its urban fabric at the metropolitan level last year, and the challenges we are now facing.

In 2018, the City of Milan created a design team within AMAT (its Environmental, Territorial and Mobility Agency) with the ambition to revolutionize public spaces in Milan, with a human scale vision. We’ll discuss the approach and results but also the obstacles and lessons learned from this process. The secret of “Officina Urbana” is not to become archistars, but to create a team of archistreet(fighter)s and placemakers, to enable everyone to have an impact on the public sphere.

Supporting Living Infrastructures: Co-Designing Nature Based Solutions for Waterfront Protection
Friday September 27, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Citizen involvement in Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) creation improves societal effect. Citizen participation in NbS production is understudied, despite evidence that it may shift behaviour, raise awareness, and encourage sustainable solutions.

Attendees will use human-driven 3D printing to build concrete structures that can sustain reed growth and merge human and environmental demands. This DIY activity will address aquatic nature-based solutions and alternative public engagement methods. The concrete structures can be installed in freshwater lakes as shore protective units to enhance biodiversity and support ecological systems and to understand how active engagement can change community values.

At the end of the workshop, attendees can take home a pre-made scale model of the structure they helped manufacture as a token of their participation. The role of this token in creating value from the experience will be addressed in the concluding survey questions.

The Place Man & Local Heroes from the Netherlands
Friday September 27, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Our session will include a screening of "The Place Man" (19 min), highlighting Fred Kent's contributions to the placemaking movement. After the film, a panel discussion on "Local Power & The Battle for Place" will feature experts sharing strategies for community-driven urban transformation. This session will explore how communities can reclaim public spaces and empower local stakeholders, offering actionable insights into fostering local power.

The people of Buurland have shown that anyone can be a placemaking hero. They turned an area slated for demolition into a thriving community in Utrecht. Even after vacating in October 2023, Buurland's residents successfully negotiated with the municipality for a potential comeback. The session will explore Buurland's inspiring journey, highlighting the roles of collaboration, leadership, and resilience in creating vibrant communities. Through Qendresa and other residents' stories, attendees will gain tangible insights into community empowerment and sustainable development.

This session at PWE '24 is essential, offering a mix of inspiration and practical advice. The documentary provides a compelling narrative, while the panel discussion offers concrete steps for participants to implement in their own communities. Don't miss this opportunity to be inspired and equipped for impactful change

Voices from the South - Placemaking Latin America
Friday September 27, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
The panel will present different perspectives on the actions of the Placemaking Latin America Network, established in 2017, which brings together more than 300 professionals, activists, and academics, and has already held 6 international meetings.

The panel focuses on the views of different stakeholders regarding the possibilities of small-scale transformation of the Latin American reality, a continent marked by enormous social contrasts where citizen urbanism is a powerful tool for altering the status quo. In this context, the particularities of placemaking in Latin America are highlighted in relation to the Global North. Citizen urbanism will be discussed by different voices - academia, civil society organizations, government, international organizations - from different countries - Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, Panama - a plurality of contexts that, however, reveal common challenges and weaknesses.

Challenged by great inequalities and scarce resources, citizen urbanism emerges as a tool for local transformation, within the reach of the communities themselves. A small-scale action, carried out in collaboration with citizens in less favored contexts, has the potential to go far beyond "space activation”.

From the South, we come to open the conversation about the political potential of citizen urbanism, exploring from different cases what is the capacity for social, environmental, economic, and cultural transformation.

Holy Houses and Placemaking in the City: Podwalk Cool Zuid investigates the urban development in Rotterdam's Cool-Zuid neighbourhood, where thousands of additional homes will be built, and new residents will move into the area soon. Amid this urban development, there are four varying church buildings. What role do these buildings play in the neighbourhood, and how will their role change in the face of this development?

Heilige Huisjes Rotterdam is creating a PodWalk that tells the story of these places in a changing urban landscape and gives the listener the chance to experience the neighbourhood of Cool Zuid in a new way. Composed of interviews and contemplative commentary, the PodWalk will be presented through a publicly accessible neighbourhood tour.
