Benches and Beyond: Strategic Steps for Placemaking
Thursday September 26, 2024 10:00 - 11:15 CEST
This session explores the transformative practice of placemaking through a series of dynamic, TED-style talks. Each speaker will have 12 minutes to share practical examples and insights. They will illustrate the journey from conceptual inspiration to real-world implementation, highlighting how modest beginnings, like benches, can evolve into significant community landmarks and large project initiatives. This panel aims to inspire attendees with actionable strategies for creating engaging, functional, and vibrant public spaces. Let us discover how innovative placemaking can foster community connection and revitalisation on both small and large scales. Speakers are encouraged to share how they are applying the principles of placemaking on a larger scale. Please focus on one or two clear examples that outline the storyline and process, avoiding a broad array of examples.

Placemaking Hackathon - Space is the Place
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:30 - 14:30 CEST
Placemaking Collaboration On Location: Work will be done where it matters and where placemaking is applied. Meet future placemakers and co-create...

As part of a student-Placemaking-Hackathon session, daily meet-ups are organised - welcome anytime between 11.30 am till 14.30 pm - on the vacant site of the former Keilewerf. In joining, you will contribute to the development of this unique place in M4H, get to know parties that are active in the area and learn from the inspiring history of the Keilewerf initiative.

In the M4H district in Rotterdam, a collective of creative makers has been active in the Keilewerf for 10 years. A success story that unfortunately took a different turn as a result of a disastrous fire in June 2023. The story of the Keilewerf wille be shown in a retrospective exhibition called “10 years of Keilewerf”.

Approximately 100 students from the minor Urban Development and the minor FM & Urban Placemaking will engage in developing concepts for the Keilewerf site. Kunst & Complex location (Keileweg 28) is our homebase. The results of the collaboration between participants of the PMW and students will be part of the retrospective exhibition.

Create Together Communities Through Greener Spaces & Gardens in Cities
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
We want to improve the quality of life in neighbourhoods to make more places greener. As cities and housing corporations we see a lot of places that can be better used. Public spaces and semi-public places around social housing have sometimes bad quality and are not well used.

Together with our citizens and tenants we start processes to design more attractive, healthier and greener places to make more places for community, to come together, to play and give more space for biodiversity, meetings, playgrounds and climat adaption.

In different countries and cities we meet the same challenges. Cities and housing corporations from Portugal, the Netherlands, France and United Kingdom will show in this workshops you some good examples in our cities and together we will share our challenges and questions. How do you like to contribute to greener the areas and built communities? Which steps can you follow to engage several stakeholders to invest in greener spaces? Can you share with us your good examples? Come and join our workshop and participate with your knowledge and experiences

Learning From Failure: Intentions, Expectations & Risks
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
For any project to be a success, a placemaker has to find common ground between different aspirations and priorities by being the driver towards a common goal and outcomes. In a university context, students have to balance the requirements of their course in addition to satisfying the needs and expectations of the stakeholders they are working with.

In this session we will explore and develop the tools to measure success, be it learning outcomes forstudents in an educational context or spatial and social outcomes for communities. Success and failureare closely linked, and can be simultaneous. A project that was an utter failure in terms of delivery can provide the best educational outcome for a student or practitioner, and vice versa. A short term failure might lead to long term gain by planting the seed for something greater to happen. Equally, a short term success can easily evaporate.

Through case studies we will explore the good, and not so good, of placemaking. Through interactive workshop discussions we will identify potential risks and opportunities that will assist students and professional placemakers alike to benchmark their output by framing expectations against defined criteria providing invaluable learnings for future projects.

SNFCC- Thinking Big & ‘Small’
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
How does a mega-project, in term of architecture, offering and visitation create meaningful micro- connections on a community level? The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is housing two of Greece’s most historical institutions, the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece alongside one of the city’s’ newest and most innovative green areas, the Stavros Niarchos Park. Boasting its Renzo Piano state of the art premises and having expanded the city’s cultural map beyond the metropolitan center of Athens the SNFCC is simultaneously considered by many an extension of their house’s yard. Practices, experiments, and challenges in creating a landmark that feels like a place for all.

What Do You Think of Bridgekeepershouses? - Knowledge Session
Thursday September 26, 2024 11:45 - 13:00 CEST
THIS SESSION TAKES PLACE OUTSIDE OF THE VENUES - THE MEETING POINT IS:
Koningsdam 1, 3011 TN Rotterdam

Bridge keepers' houses are increasingly lonely and empty because bridges are centrally controlled via cameras. As a result, the social role of the bridge keeper is increasingly being lost. These sympathetic, small spaces (and sometimes also enormous bridge cellars under the road surface) are increasingly gaining new meaning in the Netherlands as exhibition space, art/culture/community space, hairdresser, hotel room and more. Since 2012, the Bridge Keepers' Houses Foundation has built up various expertise in the field of knowledge center, projects and management and aims to give empty bridge keepers' houses in the Netherlands a new and sustainable purpose.

In the Netherlands we estimate that there are approximately 1000 bridge keepers' houses. But what about the rest of Europe?

The Bridge Keepers' Houses Foundation aims to give vacant bridge keepers' houses a new purpose in the Netherlands. We want to use the power of the Placemaking Community to come up with a new destination for one of the vacant bridge keepers' houses in Rotterdam. So we do a brainstorm on a very special location ship ramp ‘Koningspoort’ We involve the municipality of Rotterdam, which owns the bridge keeper's house, with multiple civil servants from different departments.

Thursday September 26, 2024 12:30 - 13:00 CEST
Can placemaking supports better aging, inspire new health professional vocation or even help us die with dignity?

Nursing the Care
Integrating health in Multi-Generational Community Living

Nursing the Care is a visionary initiative, set on weaving a seamless fabric of health services, care workers, and comprehensive care into existing residential spaces where they are most needed. By caring for the people that will take care of us we can create a positive loop effect that can include older adults and multiple generations. This is what we want to do in the social housing area of Axelborg in Denmark where approximately 603 residents live in 284 tenancies.

- Share concrete tactics for mixing up your places; combining offices with schools, shopping malls with libraries, and airports with forests.

This vision challenges traditional standards of zoning and spatial organization, advocating for a seamless integration of work, education, culture, play, and nature – within the same close quarters. At its core, the conversation is driven by the belief that by embracing the 1.5-minute place concept, we can create more inclusive, liveable and loveable places that enrich the lives of those having a relation to them.

Co-Designing Climate-Resilient & Inclusive Neighbourhoods
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
How can we engage and ensure citizens, including the less commonly heard voices, shape how their neighbourhoods are redesigned to be healthier, more climate resilient and great places to live?

During our discussion and to try and answer this, you will hear about challenges and best practices from 3 European projects, and from Paris to Asia we’ll learn how cities are bringing nature to streets, squares and schools, all with a common objective to co-design more climate resilient and inclusive neighbourhoods. The session will share how to reconnect cities with nature, improve health and wellbeing and how these practices are helping communities to adapt and prepare for extreme climate events.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panellists focused on the different ways each project is trying to respond to this question! From focusing on co-designing spaces with less heard voices, using proximity planning to address citizens needs and dreams, using citizen science to create more resilient spaces in cities, neighbourhoods and schoolyards, to embedding health and wellbeing into the design process.

Representing projects ReGreeneration, LIFE CRITICAL, UP2030, and OASIS Schoolyards, City representatives from Bradford, UK, Thessaloniki Greece, and Dordrecht, the Netherlands, as well as C40 Cities and Resilient Cities Network will be present.

Note: This session will use headphones for audio

Expedition: Future(s) of the Rotterdam Service Courts
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Meeting Point: Het Industriegebouw, Goudsesingel 66, 3011 KD Rotterdam
Ending point: Jonker Franshof

Service courts are the hidden backstreets of the center of Rotterdam. They are part of the post-war city-block where living, working and shopping were interwoven in a new typology. On the scale of the inner city the service courts form a circuit of supply roads and transhipment areas. With the shift from goods to services and new urban logistics, the supply function has become less dominant. This, in combination with the trend to give cars less space, calls for a re-evaluation of the service courts; as a reservoir of public space for climate adaptation and encounters.

During this session the participants will explore Rotterdam in a totally different way and we will collectively discover the potential of these public spaces by questioning: How can these underused spaces, with a total area of 25 soccer fields, be used to increase the diversity of public spaces, routes and living environments?

We end the tour in a service court which functions as one example of temporary activation; we will discuss the strong points of this interventions and the points of improvement. This reflection will be a valuable part of our overall evaluation of this pilot project (running during the month of September).

Nature Explorers Walkshop: Discovering Rotterdam's Hidden Residents
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Join us for the "Nature Explorers Walkshop," a unique and immersive adventure designed especially for children and their caregivers through Rotterdam's urban landscape! Participants will embark on a playful exploration of the hidden world of non-human actors that call our city home. This interactive walkshop offers a hands-on experience, engaging with the city's trees, water canals, and native plants and animals through fun challenges and activities.

Participants will receive a "Nature Explorer Kit" containing a map, a booklet with profiles of non-human personas, and materials for the journey. At various exploration stations, they'll encounter different non-human actors like trees, birds, and flowers, learning fascinating facts about their roles in the ecosystem and completing related tasks.

Through this engaging session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity, urban resilience, and the importance of coexisting with nature in urban spaces. They'll discover how these natural elements mitigate climate change impacts and enhance community well-being.

By participating, children and families will develop a greater appreciation for Rotterdam's natural heritage and be inspired to advocate for sustainable placemaking practices. This session not only promotes environmental awareness but also fosters a sense of stewardship and connection to the local environment, making it a must-attend event at Placemaking Week Europe 2024.

Public & Private Sector: Making Placemaking Last
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
This session digs into the dynamics between the public and private sectors in sustainable placemaking. By examining cases from throughout Europe, we will critically assess the business case for placemaking, and what strategic partnerships can do to elevate local initiatives and foster sustainable change without losing touch with grassroots communities.

The panel will discuss:
-What role do businesses play in sustainable social infrastructure and tactical urbanism?
-Who is responsible for placemaking and how should its use and impact be measured?
-Can strategic public-private partnerships create places for people and drive positive change?
-How can we achieve sustainable long-term collaborations at the local level?

Through an interactive session with participants, we will explore the benefits and challenges of public-private partnerships, their impacts on communities, and strategies for achieving lasting positive outcomes. This will include a debate focussed on concrete examples of placemaking practice, exploring whether placemaking is repackaging existing offers or establishing a new discipline that challenges the status quo and promotes people-focused urban development.  Participants will gain insights into concrete examples of public-private partnerships, effective organizational models, and how to continue to manage partnerships over the long term.

InclusiveCity: Making Inclusive Third Spaces
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Inclusivity is the cornerstone of thriving urban spaces. It’s about creating environments
where everyone, regardless of background, ability, or identity, feels welcome and
valued. In cities, inclusivity is crucial, it fosters community, enhances quality of life, and
ensures that all residents can participate in and benefit from the vibrancy of urban life.
Rijnhaven, and more specifically Luxor Theatre are two of the most relevant locations in
Rotterdam when it comes to urban developments and leisure, and both are striving for
the implementation of inclusivity.

The session will begin inside the Luxor Theatre, where a speech from the theatres
general director will be held to share insights on how places like Café Dox are essential
for fostering diversity and connection. This will be held in the iconic Rijnfoyer, to allow
for a breathtaking view of Rijnhaven, and its new developments.

Following this speech, a second speaker will join to share more detailed insights on the
topic of inclusivity and its importance in society, with the goal of informing and sharing
knowledge from experts.

The second part of the session will be an interactive activity. This experience will allow
for the visitors to engage with inclusivity firsthand, and to explore activities that
challenge the understanding of accessibility, community engagement, and urban
design. It’s an opportunity to think creatively about how we can make Rijnhaven a space
where everyone feels they belong.

Common Ground: Game Plans for Neighbourhood Co-Creation
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Initiating bottom-up change in the city through transforming neighbourhood spaces into places of collective production, use and governance entails multiple phases: forming a consortium of stakeholders, activating a space, addressing organisational, programmatic, design and governance aspects. Our session simulates a placemaking process facilitated in a two-phase interactive role-playing workshop that invites participants to create self-organised scenarios for co-design and co-governance of neighbourhood spaces.

Phase 1: THE COMMON CATALOGUE EXPERIMENT
Participants assume roles of urban actors with different interests and levels of influence. The session explores effective coalitions for bottom-up development and their ability to achieve communal goals. Imagine a game of “Clue”, but the mystery is “who will decide the fate of our common urban spaces?”.

Phase 2: COMMONING THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
The formed coalitions of actors co-create solutions for designing and governing neighbourhood common spaces that meet their communal needs. Following a card-game roadmap, they explore effective programmatic and design aspects that foment the sustainability of the common spaces over time.

The workshop inspires participants to pursue local change in their community and empowers them with skills and tools to achieve community-driven local development: from forming sustainable coalitions, to achieving their common visions through negotiations and trade-offs.

Placemaking With Local & Global Networks
Thursday September 26, 2024 14:30 - 15:45 CEST
Learn from global placemaking network leaders and emerging networks, and discuss strategies for growing the collective learning, advocacy and impact for national and agenda placemaking networks and campaigns.

The PlacemakingX Global Placemaking Summit recently convened 150 of the world's placemaking leaders in Mexico City to set the course for the global placemaking movement and supporting the 30+ regional placemaking networks with emerging cross-cutting global agendas.

This moment represents a major evolution point for placemaking, since we launched the movement over10 years ago from Project for Public Spaces. We started PlacemakingX in 2019, almost 5 years ago, with the goal of further decentralizing and networking the movement globally, and have since seen strong self-organization around the very adaptive and nimble regional and national networks.

Informed by, and looking to support, these networks, the next evolution of placemaking movement will include cross-cutting agendas that are being formed with similar structures and process to the regional networks. As with the national networks, each agenda has leaders that have emerged to form each agenda network. While continuing to be open to additional leadership, these leaders are helping to take responsibility for guiding and growing the learning, advocacy and action of the network.

We invite placemaking leaders to join these regional and agenda networks to help them realize their potential. These networks and agendas are all designed to keep each-other supported, challenged and inspired.

Each part of the world is leading the placemaking conversation from different strengths.
Whether from a dominant discipline, sector, or demographic, every strength has much to offer, teach the rest of the world.

Towards Community Cohesion: The Power of Resident-Led Walks
Thursday September 26, 2024 15:15 - 15:45 CEST
This session provides a case study of Jane’s Walk - a rare example of placemaking that is truly community-driven. It sees everyday residents and city-dwellers – rather than just planners and architects – as the true experts on their cities and neighbourhoods. It acts on the idea that cities can and should be self-organised, by encouraging residents to lead their own walking tours on any topic they like, and encouraging cities around the globe to lead their own Jane’s Walk festivals in whatever way they see fit.

In this session, you will learn how Jane’s Walk has established itself as a global, grassroots, community-led initiative. We will share stories and anecdotes on the power it has to build connections across the 500+ cities in which it operates, celebrating the legacy of Jane Jacobs and her contributions to urban studies and city planning.

Come and get inspired by this movement – a simple yet incredibly effective means of fostering vibrant and inclusive cities. You might discover new perspectives and principles to apply in your own placemaking endeavours.

Social Impact, Place & a Bit of Persuasion - Insights from Australia
Thursday September 26, 2024 15:15 - 15:45 CEST
How do we encourage organisations to see engaging communities around place as more than a ‘nice to have’ - or worse, as something to avoid for fear of basic design feedback? An answer may be in using market-focused organisational mechanisms such as ‘ESG’ and ‘corporate social responsibility’.

This session will highlight examples from Australia which we hope will bring new perspectives on engagement and community development, demonstrating ways projects can harness organisational aspirations and commitments around ‘the S in ESG’ (i.e. social impact) to help drive better local engagement and a more inclusive place outcomes.

The session will be focused on a new methodology designed to help organisations better understand what the new consultancy Amplifier Collective refers to as ‘the five P’s’ - place, people, policy, politics and partnerships - and drive more targeted local responses to social impact and engagement. These might include strategies and partnerships for purpose-driven procurement, community development, corporate giving/volunteering, creating employment pathways, and economic development – and importantly find
ways to build internal capacity to deliver places for people.

Hometown Architect: Catalysts for Community-Led Town Regeneration
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 16:45 CEST
Hometown Architect is a unique initiative by the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) that brings together local architects and community stakeholders to explore possibilities to regenerate their town centres. This is a community-led placemaking approach that recognises the unique value of each town and village and understands that local knowledge is key in the effort to revitalise town centres. By encouraging connections and combining the power of shared imaginations, Hometown Architect acts as a catalyst for change.

Hometown Architect aligns with the objectives of the recent Town Centre First Policy in Ireland and aims to support its delivery by facilitating local communities to participate in a co-design process to envision the sustainable regeneration of their town centres.

Participants in this session will have the opportunity to hear about the development of community-led placemaking projects in the Irish context, looking at the challenges and opportunities. Hearing from Vanessa Menegaldo, manager of IAF’s ‘Reimagine’ placemaking programme and Helena McElmeel, the architect that worked on one of the projects, participants will have the chance to learn about the work developed and the methods used to engage with community stakeholders in the process of transforming towns to make them better places to live, work and enjoy.

Sê Bairrista - Improving Public Space & Social Cohesion
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 16:45 CEST
Through Sê Bairrista (a project developed by a consortium of an architecture office, NGOs, community groups, and public companies, and funded by European and national partners) R/C proposed the qualification of 5 public spaces in a municipal housing neighborhood in Lisbon for activities such as playing, cultivating, chatting, or debating, aiming to improve the quality of public space and increase social cohesion in its different dimensions: sense of belonging, relationships of trust between residents, and between residents and local institutions.

The project was monitored and evaluated by the Lisbon Institute of Social Sciences and had the following impact: 30% increase in trust in institutions; 26% increase in social cohesion and the feeling of belonging to the territory and the group; 29% increase in interest in participating in citizen initiatives; 32% increase in the frequency of use of public spaces.

With this short presentation, we would like to discuss questions of methodology of co-design and impact assessment involving different groups and local entities and the importance of design in creating a sense of belonging in the specific context of a municipal housing neighborhood.

How to Enable Climate Resilient area Development with Civic Participation?
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
If we want to create meaningful impact in the field of climate change mitigation, public participation and sustainable and circular urban development there is an urgent need to bridge small scale civic initiatives (in placemaking) with larger infrastructure and area development initiatives and enable participation and civic development in these projects. While civil society initiatives are increasingly being recognised in the field of place-led development, civil society actors and initiatives in the area of infrastructure still receive too little acknowledgement and support. But what can we learn from these initiatives and what (regulatory) framework do they need?

In this session we will take a closer look at one of the most interesting area development projects in Rotterdam (Keilekwartier / Merwe-Vierhavens) and learn from international best-practice examples. We will investigate how civic infrastructure initiatives (e.g. energy communities) can foster resilient area development and create benefits and a just transition for the local community. How can these large scale developments still include citizen initiatives in a meaningful and just way? Can we develop good overarching frameworks for these developments?

Co-Creating Social & Green Places for Outdoor Work
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Outdoor work and appealing workspaces outdoors foster creativity, social interactions, and well-being, while enriching a city's network of public spaces. This workshop focuses on collaboratively designing green and sociable outdoor work areas and raising awareness about their importance.

The session highlights the overlooked aspect of placemaking and vibrant cities: work and workplaces. As an example, 1 out of 10 companies are located in one of the 3800 business parks in the Netherlands and almost a third of the jobs can be found in such environments.

In the session participants get insights about the benefits of outdoor work by the founder of Outdoor Office Day Ioana Biris and how the movement promotes sustainable urban design, a more creative working culture, well-being and nature connection. Päivi Raivio & Daniel Bumann from Parkly, an innovative urban furniture company creating green and social places, will present how green modular pocket parks have changed outdoor spaces in work and study environments and present solutions for turning grey spaces into vibrant places.

The interactive workshop session focuses on co-creating guidelines and ideas for great, connected outdoor working environments. A light hand book will be published after Placemaking Week by the session team.

Building Creative Cities: a Practitioner’s Guide to Reclaiming Space for Arts and Culture in Cities and the Public Realm
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Cities around the world, often face a chronic shortage of affordable creative space for makers, artists, musicians and creatives. And, what little space that is left, is often being taken over for development forcing creatives away from their existing communities in a perpetual cycle. Yet quite often, space that could be utilised for vibrant creative use is hiding in plain sight; from vacant buildings, offices and retail shops to carparks, laneways and the public realm.

In this panel you’ll heart about several incredible urban space transformation projects, led by art communities and placemaking practitioners from around the world and how they create and incubate community, build interesting bridges and connections, infuse creative ideas and develop incredibly vibrant partnerships that make our cities wonderful places to live.
You’ll hear about tips and tricks for working with landlords, building owners and statutory authorities, temporary intervention models and unique ‘meanwhile use’ of vacant space, ‘bending the rules’ as well as long term governance and funding models.

Hear from Trans Europe Halls, one of the largest and oldest cultural networks in Europe, and a pioneer organisation worldwide when it comes to retrofitting abandoned urban spaces for arts and culture as well as several practitioners from Australia, the UK and France in an inspiring panel session.

Creative Placemaking: Development Without Displacement Through Art & Culture
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Many communities have enjoyed the benefits of new development leveraging art and culture, or creative placemaking (CPM), but have also seen the pitfalls, such as displacement. Millions of people around the globe are annually displaced due to wars/conflict, natural disasters, and economic instability.   But displacement also occurs from new real estate development that can bring welcome amenities and new energy to a neighborhood.  New development can also drive property values and rents up, forcing out those less able to pay, often vulnerable, diverse populations.

This session raises awareness about advertent and inadvertent displacement in the built environment and strategies, leveraging art and culture, to avoid displacement. Studies have shown that cities or places that are diverse and inclusive outperform others that are not. So avoiding or limiting displacement is essential for successful place-led development.

Participants will gain knowledge through research, case studies, and interactive Q&A about CPM best practices and how to employ them to enhance the value of place and deliver benefits that accrue to all stakeholders - community residents and businesses, developers and their partners, and government. Delivered by a panel of subject matter experts living and working in the US and Europe, this session looks back for historical context and lessons learned, and forward to a possible future pregnant with vibrant, healthy places.

City Flows: Discovering the City with Our Senses
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
This participatory walkshop is designed to explore the connection between the city and the water. Through walking, observing and engaging with other placemakers, we look and map the presence and traces how water forms part of the city.

The first half of our walkshop, will take the participants to a playground of public space. Through a ‘Walk&Sense’ session we will explore the surrounding environment by using our senses. This experiential exercise will emphasise how we perceive, sense, frame and construct the places we inhabit.

The session will conclude with a joint reflection and analogue data visualisation exercise. This will allow participants to share their experiences and insights, showcasing the traces, marks, and narratives related to water that define our cityscape in the public space itself.

The walkshop will be conducted by the members of the Bosch Alumni Network’s Placemaking Impact Field.

Crafting Utopias: Storytelling and Service Design for Placemaking
Thursday September 26, 2024 16:15 - 17:30 CEST
Join us for a workshop that combines the speculative power of storytelling with the hands-on perspective of service design, introducing a narrative-driven approach to placemaking.

In this session, you'll explore a fictional future neighborhood through the daily lives of its inhabitants—humans, plants, animals, and insects. Inspired by the children’s storybook format, participants will design their own story books encouraging radical participation in their own fictional scenarios and imagining what would make our heroes’ utopian lives fulfilling and happy.

As we dive into these stories, insights about community life will emerge, highlighting potential issues and opportunities for improvement. Combining sketching and storytelling with a systemic approach, we will explore how the crafted stories intertwine, making the multiple factors involved in placemaking emerge, and highlighting potential action points. What resources, activities, and connections, are necessary to make the narratives become reality? What systemic changes are required?

This workshop explores the complexity of community-based placemaking processes, weaving storytelling and design-driven methodologies to generate systemic change towards a collective sense of place.

Bog Bothy - Spaces for Shelter, Retreat & Deep Engagement with a Changing Landscape
Thursday September 26, 2024 17:00 - 17:30 CEST
Join us for a down-to-earthly presentation of "Bog Bothy," a transformative placemaking project collaborating with Irish peatland communities to co-create bothies—spaces for shelter, retreat, and profound engagement with the evolving landscape. As Ireland transitions from peat extraction, this session delves into how architecture can uphold historical connections with the bog while safeguarding it for future generations.

With one-sixth of Ireland covered in bogs, the end of peat extraction marks a major environmental and social shift. This session addresses the challenges of this transition and issues of spatial justice for rural communities. By documenting historical and contemporary peatland architecture, "Bog Bothy" counters exclusionary narratives of 'wilderness' and 'rewilding' through understanding bogs as deeply cultural landscapes. It highlights the adaptive reuse of materials and knowledge from the peat industry, presenting bothies as symbols of positive change and community aspiration.

Participants will discover innovative methods to reconnect with post-industrial peatlands, gaining insights into architectural solutions that support environmental stewardship and community resilience. Bog Bothy is a collaboration between the Irish Architecture Foundation’s ‘Reimagine’ Placemaking Programme and 12th Field.

This project is uniquely positioned to inspire and educate festival attendees about innovative architectural responses to local design challenges and environmental transformation.

Bridges to be Built & The Empathic Debate Club
Thursday September 26, 2024 18:00 - 20:00 CEST
Building bridges between people is crucial in today’s interconnected world. Trust and empathy are the foundations of these bridges, enabling us to collaborate effectively and create inclusive, resilient communities. Bridging organisations is particularly important as it facilitates the sharing of resources, knowledge, and best practices, fostering innovation and enhancing the impact of collective efforts. To foster these qualities, we must explore innovative partnerships that transcend traditional boundaries—not just between organisations but also across concepts and communities. For instance, how can the 15-minute city model, with its focus on creating accessible neighbourhoods, and tactical urbanism, through its low-cost, community-driven projects, empower individuals and communities to take ownership of their spaces? By integrating these ideas with broader strategies for trust-making, we can cultivate environments where collaboration flourishes, and empathy becomes the driving force for positive change. Additionally, building bridges across diverse communities encourages a sense of shared purpose and mutual support, which is vital for addressing complex urban challenges. When communities come together, they can pool their unique strengths and perspectives, leading to more sustainable and innovative solutions that benefit everyone.
Following a discussion on building bridges between organisations, communities and across concepts, we invite you and members of the audience to join us for our evening activity, the Empathic Debate Club. Here, we will delve into fun and thought-provoking debates centred around our four core festival themes. Together, we’ll explore the intersections and challenges that shape our collective future, and challenge ourselves to find common ground between polarised positions. Are you brave enough to participate in the debate?

Four core themes (for the debate):
(1) Creating place and making it last
(2) Climate adaptation: together towards change
(3) Living with water: the flow of the city
(4) Local power and the battle of space
